Union claims Bashas' selling outdated baby formula

A brochure hitting residential mailboxes claims that Bashas' Food City stores, including the three in the Yuma area, were found to have outdated baby formula on their shelves.

Bashas' claims the issue is a "smear campaign" being waged by the United Food and Commercial Workers union against the grocery chain, which it is trying to unionize.

The union says it's about consumer protection.

A state agency that conducts store inspections reported it hasn't found any violations, but acknowledged that by law it is required to sample only a small percentage of the total product.

The colorful brochure, indicating it was distributed by Hungry for Respect, is titled "A betrayal of a mother's trust" and shows a mother and infant.

According to the brochure, 29 Food City stores around the state were found to have outdated baby formula on their shelves during inspections conducted by the coalition in May and June. The list includes the two Food City stores in Yuma and the one in San Luis, Ariz.
