Community Outraged by Shaw’s Treatment of Distribution Center Workers
Shaw’s Cuts Health Care Coverage for Workers and their Families
METHUEN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Community supporters are set to protest Shaw’s latest attack on its distribution center workers. As of tomorrow, striking Shaw’s workers from the Methuen, Mass., will no longer have health insurance for themselves or their families. Shaw’s cut them off from the health care plan in an attempt to intimidate workers to accept a substandard contract.
Activists are setting up a corporate crime scene to protest Shaw’s actions. Workers, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 791, have been on strike since March 7 after rejecting the company’s demands to shoulder an unaffordable amount of their health care costs. Shaw’s actions are especially counterproductive considering the fact that the Massachusetts legislature passed a law that will require Shaw’s and every employer to offer health insurance to every employee starting in three years.
The UFCW is ready to negotiate with the company in pursuit of a fair agreement, but Shaw’s has thus far refused. UFCW members, community leaders, and concerned shoppers will continue to picket the Methuen warehouse and Shaw’s non-union store locations until the company returns to the bargaining table.
