Union organizers target bank tellers

http://www.suntimes.com/business/2304368,CST-NWS-bank23.article

May 22, 2010 SUN-TIMES STAFF

The Service Employees International Union is setting its sights on organizing bank tellers.

New SEIU President Mary Kay Henry told Bloomberg News that the union wants to "provide whistleblower protections to tellers who are being pressured to sell products to customers" who can't afford to pay.

Bank workers have been contacted in Boston, she said. Labor unions in the United States are battling record low membership.

Last week, the SEIU and other labor unions, along with Chicago-based National People's Action group, held protests outside the homes of banking executives and in Washington.

1. I hope the SEIU is able to organize the tellers.
I think it will be a win-win situation for Americans as a
whole. For one, the tellers will be able to earn a decent wage
with good benefits (I know some tellers locally and they are
paid almost slave wages). Secondly, the whistleblower aspect
you eluded to seems like it could potentially keep the banks a
little more honest in the course of everyday business (I know
they can only be just a little honest since they are bankers,
but a little here and there will help).

2. That would be cool.
I have heard from lots of people who work for BOA say that they hate trying to sell products to people and they hate the hard-to-achieve goals BOA sets.

At my bank, I've never been asked to buy things or "upgrade."
I still plan to change because I was told some incorrect information and I refuse to pay $10 a month to a bank just to have a checking account with them. No way, no how. Plus I can get a better interesting rate on my savings account elsewhere and it's still a local bank.

I'd love for my workplace to be unionize. We desperately need it.

3. I hope mine unionizes too.
I actually sold mutual funds for a little while a couple years
ago and decided that the fees the management company I worked
for were ridiculous. There were comparable funds with other
companies with fees that were often half of the one I worked
for and some were about a third of the annual percentage. I
got out of the industry since I thought (and still think) it's
completely unfair to everyone involved except the fund
managers and their superiors.
