In Memoriam: Anti-War Vietnam Veteran and Labor Activist Bill Davis

http://chicago.indymedia.org/feature/display/70323/index.php

Bill Davis, Vietnam war veteran, longtime labor and anti-war activist and national coordinator of VVAW — Vietnam Veterans Against the War — has died. Davis was a key member for decades in VVAW, begun by military veterans in 1967 to oppose U.S. military intervention in Vietnam, U.S. imperialism more broadly, and to support the rights and needs of veterans. Davis also served as president of Auto Mechanics Union Local 701, which he first joined in 1977, until he retired several years ago, and represented Local 701 in the Chicago Federation of Labor.

Dear Friends,

We are very sad to inform you that Bill Davis suddenly passed away last night. Although some of us knew he had been suffering from a serious lung infection, he continued to be active in a range of political causes until he was hospitalized this past weekend.

Bill was the National Coordinator for Vietnam Veterans Against the War, an Air Force Veteran, and Vice-President of his union local for the International Association of Machinists. He was a frequent and popular speaker at many antiwar rallies, connecting the labor, veterans and peace & justice movements. Young people especially loved his down-to-earth explanations of serious ideas with both militancy and good spirits.

He was also a founding member of the Oct 27 Mobilization Committee to Stop the War.

A memorial service is still in the planning stages. He is survived by his wife, Joan Davis, and daughter, Becky Davis, of Oak Park, IL.

He will be greatly missed, even as the waves he made during his long fight for justice and peace continue to touch us all.

1. Thanks for letting us know about Bill Davis's passing
He was a do-er. And we need all the do-ers we can get.
