WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court asked the Bush administration Monday to weigh in on AT&T Inc.'s appeal of a class action case that resulted in a $31.2 million verdict against the company.
The Justice Department's Solicitor General, the administration's lawyer, may recommend that the justices either consider or reject the appeal. The Solicitor General also usually consults with government agencies with relevant expertise.
The request indicates that at least some justices are interested in the case, though the court could still turn it down. The justices will consider whether to take the case after receiving the Solicitor General's analysis.
The case began in October 2001, when a class action was filed against a pension plan administered by local phone company Ameritech, which later became part of AT&T. The lead plaintiff in the class action is Linda Call, a longtime Ameritech employee, and the lawsuit is on behalf of 2,000 other Ameritech employees.
