Tribune staff report
October 7, 2007

After twice voting down a proposed contract agreement with the city, union truck drivers have approved a new 10-year pact, labor officials said Friday.

The final tally by members of Teamsters Local 726 was 974-159.

"We're very happy on this," said Tom Clair, secretary-treasurer of the local union, which represents about 2,000 city workers who drive everything from garbage trucks to airport snowplows.

"The highlights were 10 years at the prevailing rate and a cap on health insurance for four years," Clair said. "And seniority was preserved."

Vince Tenuto, who is running against Clair in a coming election and helped lead opposition in the first two votes, also applauded the ratification.

"We didn't get everything, but we got the most important things," he said. He cited seniority rights and job protection for drivers if certain city services are privatized.
