According to an October 8 press release of Kucinich for President 2008, presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich told Latino and AFL-CIO audiences that he would cancel the United States' participation in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) if he were elected as president of the United States. Kucinich stated that the trade agreements were the stimuli that caused the loss of high paying manufacturing jobs in the United States and the impetus that caused the lowering of the Mexican economy, motivating Mexicans to immigrate to the United States for work, and hence contributing to the lowering of wages in the U.S.
Kucinich elaborated his anti-trade agreements position by stating that the immigration issues were little more than scapegoats for problems with the trade agreements. The Kucinich for President 2008 press release reported that Kucinich remarked to the Latino Congress, "We've gone from President Reagan saying 'Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall' to building a wall of our own."
Another important issue addressed by Kucinich to both the Latino and AFL-CIO audiences was health care for all Americans. Kucinich is the only presidential candidate who is one of the sixty four co-sponsors of H.R. 676, a health bill that would cover all without charging premiums similar to the way Medicare covers lower income people now. About the health care issue, Kucinich was quoted in the Kucinich for President 2008 press release as saying to the AFL-CIO audience: "Somebody's running for President of the United States and they're saying they can't take on the insurance companies. If you can't take on the insurance companies, who else can't you take on?"
A third topic that Kucinich addressed was his plan for withdrawing troops as well as private contractors from Iraq. The Kucinich for President 2008 press release indicated that Kucinich took into account the protection of the Iraqi people in his plan.
Asking how many people in the Latino audience had lost faith in the Democratic Party, Kucinich evoked hands being raised by three fourths of the audience, the Kucinich for President 2008 press release stated. About one half of the audience indicated that they would like to see a stronger third party presence, the press release added.
On the Dennis for President 2008 website (
