Philadelphia Business Journal

St. Joseph's University announced the appointment of former labor leader Thomas Cronin to head the school's labor relations institute on Friday.

Cronin, who stepped down as president of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, District 47 in September, will serve as director of the Comey Institute of Industrial Relations. Cronin, whose appointment at the Philadelphia school was effective immediately, replaces John Lavin.

"I am excited to have this opportunity to further advance the work of the Comey Institute by expanding its programs to address such critical issues as globalization, trade policy, privatization and outsourcing and to understand their impact on the contemporary labor environment," Cronin said. "In many ways, this is a logical extension of the work I was doing as head of DC 47," Cronin said.

Cronin, who served 27 years as head of District 47 in Philadelphia, received a bachelor's degree from Cheyney University.
