LAS VEGAS – The crowd in the meeting room of the New York New York casino split like two aces on a blackjack table. And almost immediately, it was obvious that Barack Obama had busted.
This caucus, like eight others at casinos along Las Vegas' famed Strip, was filled with members of the Culinary Workers Union – a 60,000-member, well-organized group that pledged its support to the Illinois senator.
This union alone – with its bloc voting, minority members and ability to deliver elections – could tilt the outcome to Mr. Obama.
But when just more than half of the 168 hotel workers walked over to Hillary Rodham Clinton's side of the room, the die was cast.
"I voted for her husband in '92 and '96," said Gregory Phillips, an MGM Grand bartender who stood for Mrs. Clinton. "The union endorsement didn't mean anything because I had already chosen."
Mrs. Clinton also claimed the majority of the women and Latinos participating. She had a strong organization, she barnstormed the state and her ace in the hole proved to be her husband, who carried the usually red state in both of his elections.
