Getting a US visa set to be easier (India)
Source: Rediff Business/India

January 28, 2008 20:17 IST

Acquiring a visa for the United States is going to be easier from next year when the American missions in the country will have additional facilities in place to cater to the ever-increasing number of aspirants.

The facilities, including additional visa windows, are to be set up in the missions in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai by the next year, Ambassador David C Mulford said in New Delhi on Monday.

The number of visa windows in the Consulate in Mumbai is going to be doubled, he said.

Besides, US Consulate will be opened in Hyderabad shortly, he told journalists here while briefing on the all-round growing ties between the two countries.

Observing that the traffic of Indians going to the US has been increasing over the years, he said 4,32,000 visas were issued in 2005 and the number last year stood at 2.2 million.

Of the total number of H1-B visas issued by the US, 60 per cent are issued in India alone, he said, adding it speaks about the volume of people moving from India to America.

2. Anti-Indian racism in 5... 4... 3...

For the record, I don't think being against outsourcing indicates an anti-Indian bias.

However, when this kind of thread pops up, there are invariably racially charged comments directed towards people of Indian descent.

A recent thread like this one featured a poster saying (paraphrasing), "All Indians are selfish and take from America without giving anything in return."

3. Thank You
For Clearing up the "Anti-Indian" Racist Comment. :)

I am against outsourcing, but don't consider myself a racist by any means.

7. This is about saving American jobs in high tech industries
It has NOTHING to do with racism.

My only question to those who draw the racism card is why is it so difficult for Americans to go to India and work or start a business?

Can you answer why the privilege isn't reciprocal???

And can you answer why companies like Microsoft, HP, and the banking industry ENCOURAGE these visas and the "in-sourcing" of American jobs by foreign nationals for far less than market value and usually at sub-contract rates to undermine American jobs and the middle class.

9. Good Question....
"why is it so difficult for Americans to go to India and work or start a business?"

What about US students going to India for studies??

Less number of US students coming to India for studies

Chalsa (WB), Dec 18: Less number of American students were coming to India for studies because of the "inordinate delay" in getting Indian visas, US embassy public affairs minister counsellor Larry Schwartz claimed here today.

"For some reason or the other, may be bureaucratic process, American students are not getting Indian visas while Indian students are getting US visas and all help to study in America," Schwartz said, addressing a three-day conference for Fulbright scholars in South Asia. "This year 30 American students could not avail Indian visas as they were issued very late," he said.

Another reason for less students coming here was the "interference" by Indian authorities in the choice of subjects of US students, Schwartz said.

He said delays in issuing Indian visas was "unfortunate", especially when indo-us ties were getting stronger. The Fulbright, would shortly open a centre at R.E.C at Silchar in Assam soon to cover more areas in the north-eastern region to help more students get opportunities to study in America, he added.

Makes one wonder, Why the "interference?"

10 Ways to Beat H-1B Quota to Start Work NOW!

This year the H-1B quota ran out on the very first day! In fact, there was such a deluge of H-1B applications that the USCIS was forced to run a lottery to decide who among the applicants would receive a coveted H-1B visa. As a result, many applicants who applied on the very first day were unable to get an H-1B visa. Therefore, if you want to have a chance of obtaining an H-1B visa, your best bet is to qualify under one of the quota exemptions listed below. Best of all, if you qualify for an H-1B exemption, you can proceed with your H-1B petition immediately, to start work now (either immediately upon approval of the H-1B petition or upon receipt of the petition if you qualify for portability), without having to wait for the next fiscal year!

#1: Your Employer is NOT H-1B quota exempt, BUT, your Employment is "AT" an H-1B Exempt Institution (a “third party petitioner")
#2: Your Employer is a Non-Profit Organization AFFILIATED or RELATED to an Institution of Higher Education
#3: Your Employment is CONCURRENT with exempt employment
#4: Your Employer is an "Institution of Higher Education", e.g., a College or University
#5: Your Employer is a Nonprofit Research Organization or Government Research Organization
#6: You were previously COUNTED under the H-1B quota
#7: You have a U.S. MASTER'S DEGREE (until the 20,000 Master's quota runs out)
#8: You are a Citizen of Singapore
#9: You are a Citizen of Chile
#10: You are a Citizen of Australia
