3. K&R
This is the simple truth. American's should be ashamed by their consumption of this crap. We allowed this to happen. Many people don't see this as a big deal but it is an example of the lack of real discourse in this country. We want our politics like we want our dumbass reality television and it is going to ruin us.

5. Standing Ovation
McCain, Clinton, cable news, all of them apply guilt by association because Obama and Wright are black. It would be nice if they would be honest about it, but honesty is not a trait that any of them possess.

12. I had to 'pause' Moyers...
...to catch Brooks and Shields on The News Hour. Can't tell you how different the takes on the Wright/Obama issue were between them and Bill Moyers. First, 'our side' is at a terrible disadvantage on TNH in that Brooks is not only bright and articulate and Shields is neither. I guess it can be said of those two, Brooks and Shields (sounds like a country music duo), that they are 'terrible simplifiers'.

Thank you Bill Moyers, at least somebody is telling it as it should be...we all are guilty and should indeed hang our collective heads in shame.

16. Seriously Double Standard... Moyers lays it out with simple facts.
He's the best on this issue.
I don't see anyone else talking reasonably about this. Every talking head on TV is flogging this like a dead horse to see how much more mileage they can get out of it.
It is beyond pathetic. If they are going to play the morality card, they should all be drumming the impeachment/resignation card for Bush/Cheney for the liars they are... oh sorry! off topic!

18. Moyers is right, and Wright still needs to STFU
He says he supports Obama, but the more he talks, the more he hurts him. Let Obama win the nomination and win the election, and THEN raise hell. I don't think that Wright is stupid, but he does seem to be an egomaniac. Maybe he's being paid by the Clinton or McCain campaigns. With the damage he's done, they owe him.

19. God Bless that Man
I'm sitting here so emotional after listening to this.

Unfortunately, I don't live in the US right now, so DU would probably be the only way that I would have heard this editorial from Bill Moyers, who to be honest I have not been very familiar with until recently. Thank you so, so much for posting this. God bless him and his wisdom.

I would love to see this type of honesty and forthrightness in the hearts of all Americans, but I know that racism and racist ideals will not be extinguished in my lifetime.

26. That was such a great commentary!
And he is so spot on -- Wright gets raked over the coals for his actions, but people like Hagee and Falwell and Robertson are embraced by the Reich wingers.

It's all about the color of their skin.

39. The race card
I don't know if it is so much about unequal treatment due to race. We expect Republicans to be extremists thanks to the right wing, Moral Majority, etc, etc. - so having the endorsement of a hate-mongering preacher is nothing new. As Democrats, we have always been the inclusive party, the party of the people, the party who decries the type of divisiveness that Rev. Wright's speech includes. While Moyers essay is, as usual, thoughtful and wonderfully insightful, I feel that Rev. Wright has his own agenda, and he is well aware that his actions are damaging to Obama's campaign. I am glad Obama has finally taken a firmer stand, but the damage Wright had done to the camapaign is not entirely the media's fault - they are not the ones running around setting up press conferences to undermine Obama's campaign. He can thank his former preacher for that!!

31. The fact that Moyers refered to Jon Stewart instead of any of the "real" news
people, speaks volumes about the condition of "the media". The level of dumbness is so terrible that this essay is like a ray of sunlight through the clouds.

42. Just to be clear, I didn't mean to lessen Jon Stewart in any way with what I said...
...could have come across that way. His show is great and yes, he exposes the dumbass media as the travesty it is. And you can still laugh about it, although it gets really hard sometimes...

40. Well said, Sir!
I wish this could be the last word, the summing up of the whole Wright controversy. Pastor Wright should be remembered as someone who's made many contributions to his church and his community. And, of course, he is also someone with a great deal of anger, and as Bill Moyers pointed out: Much of that is justified.

I doubt, however, that either Clinton or McCain will let this die.

Edited on Mon May-05-08 06:09 AM by Apollo11
Just because he had to publicly distance himself from his former pastor?

In a world filled with war and violence, poverty and disease ...

I would hope that Obama will soon get over it and move on with his life.

If millions can get through divorce then Obama can get over this.
