2. I Agree With Cenk....
A bit too skimpy for a high school prom. However, I find it to be utterly ridiculous that she was arrested, taken out in handcuffs....couldn't even get a reimbursement for the prom tickets!

The girl even offered to use her train to wrap around herself and still couldn't stay.....that's sad because she at least tried to please school officials.

19. I encourage you to share your feelings on how great TYT is
Everyone *should* know it, but like many things in life, some people don't discover great things until it's far too late.

Current events show should have -
1) People disagree - I actually loved that young woman calling Cinq out and saying that he was wrong
2) But People respect each other
3) There aren't any talk overs - because fo the respect, each person in the cast says what they think and the others let them finihsh their sttements before commenting

Contrast this with any current events show on M$M and often there is little disagreement allowed

"Today we have with us So and So a Democrat, So and So a Fundamentalist preacher, So and So a neo con,"
and they all end up saying the same thing.

Unless the Dem disgrees - and then the other three all pile on and shout him down.

5. As long as her bits and pieces are covered, there was no reason to arrest her.
Fascist prom sphincter police. :D

7. The whole time I saw the news clip on huffpo I wasn't thinking about it
being too trashy, but just a very ugly dress. Was it too trashy? In the context of the prom its up to the high school to decide, I think they overreacted, she didn't need to be arrested, they should've just turned her away and given her her money back.

8. Excuse me, please ...
but has good taste completely gone out the window?

Has "anything goes" become the rule of the day?

22. And I think merely being arrested was too good for her.
I thin that she should be publicly stoned! (Maybe she was, who knows?)

11. Here is the thing....
My guess is that they had to arrest her. It was the only way to gain leverage against the inevitable lawsuit that was/is coming their way.
These nut jobs flat out don't think or even try to reach any sort of compromise about anything these days.
What is going on in Florida? Is it the water?

14. People in Houston wear skimpy clothes just like Florida. I lived there 4 years.
Edited on Mon May-12-08 10:46 PM by McCamy Taylor
Halter tops, tank tops, tube tops are the rule even for rich women going out on the town. People show a lot of skin. My own prom dress in Houston was backless, basically strapless except for some little string things, had the sides cut out with little strings holding the sides together, a low cut front. The only thing different from hers was you could not see the midriff in the front and it was long (and clingy) because this was back in 1977 and that was the style then.

They way overreacted for Houston.

13. That clothing was not illegal, since it covered more than a swimsuit, so why did the PD arrest her?
Sounds like one for the ACLU. Proms do not have greater legal standards of decency than anywhere else as far as I know. She could have worn a bikini (and been sent home) and still been legal---and that dress covered more than a bikini.

Hell, she would wear a bikini into a Church and all they could do is ask her to leave. Only a judge in a court room could have her thrown in jail for contempt. A prom is not a courtroom.

23. She was not arrested for the dress
She was not arrested for the dress. You are right, the Prom is not a courtroom. But it is a school function and a principal has full authority (check any state's statutes) over school functions. The principal thought the dress was inappropriate (I'd have to agree) and she was first asked to leave. She refused, so she was arrested for trespass.

24. Yes I believe it was refusal to leave and causing a scene
that the police were arrested. If she didn't willingly leave after that, she would have been charged like any other person who trespasses would be. I doubt she spent time in a cell or it would have been big news, she was probably just charged and released.

15. I guess there really *is* a Fashion Police then ...
... but the treatment was decidedly uncool and out of line. Escorted out in handcuffs? Wha?

That being said, the dress was just awful. Seriously.

20. She is lucky she wasn't tasered out of the school.
But what else are you going to get arrested for?! Arrested?!

Ana had a point that the best punishment would be her regret looking at the pictures years later.
