This wonderful video disappeared from You Tube for a while. Imagine my joy to see it back up now.

Steve Geller is the Florida Senate minority leader for the Democrats. He is the one who proposed an amendment about the primary...and then mocked it right out in the open.

The DNC members had handouts that included quotes by House Minority leader Dan Gelber brushing off Howard Dean, and the following transcript of Steve Geller making the motion to move the primary to Feb. 5:

Geller: "...So the Democratic leader and the Democratic leader pro tem are jointly making this motion, which we will duly show them later, that we tried not to have the election on, um, before (Feb. 5).
President: "And so Sen. Geller are you urging a negative vote or would you like us to pass this vote?"
Geller: "Oh no sir. We really, really want this. Don't we senator? (sarcasm and audible laughter in chamber).

After all the efforts to convince people that Florida Demcrats went right along with the GOP since early 2006...there has been little success on my part.

The party spokesman in March 2006 said the Democrats were "all for it".

They voted for the early primary by the vote of 115 to 1. They are still in denial. They still claim they acted in in good faith..which was all they had to do to keep their delegates.

Yay Yay to whomever got this video back up. Thank you so much.

4. They chose to be "relevant" (early) and have no delegates because they didn't care about
a few hundred people going to a party in Denver. What they did was to cynically assume that the convention was a bullshit formality and that by giving Florida voters a chance to vote early they would get media attention (and money) so their election would be relevant even though they would get no delegates. They did this very deliberately. And this is the single election in decades in which had Florida and Michigan had their primary at their usual date they would have been very, very relevant and had delegates to the convention. Geez.

And Jeremy Ring, a Democratic state senator from Broward County and co-sponsor of the legislation, defended it.

"If the choice is Florida is relevant and has no delegates versus being irrelevant and having delegates, I'd choose being relevant with no delegates," Ring said. "We did this so 18 million Floridians could take part in the presidential primaries, not so a few hundred people can go to a party in Denver."

13. Can someone dumb this down for a person who spends most of her
time being confused? Why couldn't Florida vote after February? As it is it was only a few weeks before they could have held the vote and have the delegates seated. The way they did it made it just as if we, (Floridian here) could have voted a year ago and had the same non-voice in the election.

I don't understand why Florida and Michigan would not move their elections to after February 2.

16. that is my take.
Edited on Thu May-22-08 02:39 PM by FLDem5
my view is, that Florida and Michigan were big for Clinton, and if they voted early, they would make the math, and the argument harder for the other candidates (namely Edwards, at the time, who was her biggest perceived threat).

I don't know about Michigan, but Clinton has obsessive allies in this State's party, (she goes to her super secret prayer group with Bill Nelson's wife) and they sure pushed getting us in early. Remember, she had no plan in place for after Super Tuesday - she was supposed to have the nomination wrapped up by then.

That is my opinion on pushing Florida up.

37. Not likely
Edited on Mon May-26-08 06:13 AM by SanchoPanza
If this was an organized effort by the Clinton campaign, then her supporters on the Rules Committee (all twelve of them) wouldn't have voted in favor of stripping Florida's delegates. However, due to the fact that those within the leadership of the FDP who pushed for this all declared their support for Sen. Clinton early, they will continue to face this allegation. There may even be some truth to it, but it's very rare that you have surrogates making this kind of organized power play without support from other elements within the campaign. I don't, however, completely dismiss the charge. If the FDP leadership has demonstrated one thing throughout this mess, it is their collossal ineptitude.

This has more to do with increasing the fundraising capacity of the FDP by holding an early contest, and less to do with any specific candidate.

33. No slight to you mad!
I am so awfully angry tonight I don't even know how to express it. I am sure you will come out with something lovely tomorrow, but I'm out of control with these Clintonistas this evening. I have hated these people for such a long time but tried to be even-handed for the sake of ME! Hillary has me in tears at this moment and I can hear the dog whistle because I can. This sucks on a scale of 1 to 10 by 20. I don't cry a lot and I am at an impasse with my Canadian other. Not with her mom, just with her laughing at my pain.

34. Very interesting. Private meeting with Hillary...
in Broward. Interesting timeline. No further comment.

Geller meets with Hillary

"State Sen. Steve Geller was asked to attend a private meeting with Hillary Clinton this afternoon after her Broward campaign speech. Still an undeclared super delegate, the Senate Democratic Leader from Cooper City was expecting a full court press to win him over to the Clinton camp.

Surprisingly, he said he has not received the same invite from Barack Obama.

“If I had gotten an invitation, I certainly would have gone,” he said.

Geller tomorrow has scheduled a press conference at his law office to announce a “significant development expected to have national impact.”

No, he is not announcing his endorsement in the presidential race. And he probably won’t for some time.

The next day he announced his lawsuit against the DNC.
