Obama: “I Think We Should Put it Behind Us”

The candidate responds to Clinton’s RFK comment on his flight from Puerto Rico to Chicago.

Calls remark “unfortunate,” adds:

“I think that when you’re on the campaign trail for 15 months, you’re going to make some mistakes. I don’t think Senator Clinton intended anything by it, and I think we should put it behind us.”

1. This is not what his supporters think.
But there are a ton of issues that he differs with his supporters at DU on.

2. Obama is a good man.
I am so glad he understands she did not say anything all that bad as some would have you believe.

27. Her subconscious wishes may have been revealed in her statement.
When people are tired and stressed, they may say things that they would normally censor.

This statement revealed Hillary's the associations that she makes between Obama's vulnerability as a candidate and her remaining in the race. I just hope that Obama is very careful about choosing Hillary as his vice president. I'm neutral about Obama and Hillary because I did not originally support either of them. Some weeks ago, I favored her for that second spot and even suggested it here on DU. At this point after a number of events that have occurred over the last weeks and now this one. I do not think that would be a good idea.

A president must have a running mate who supports the presidential candidate 100%. We saw with Kennedy/Johnson what can happen when a primary opponent is named as vice presidential candidate after a rancorous selection process. If Obama picks Hillary for VP, he is asking for problems. He could pick someone Hillary would like -- like Wesley Clark or Richardson for a couple of examples, but Obama should not pick Hillary. She is too ambitious and has shown that on a subconscious level the strength of her ambition is greater than her concern for Obama.

The problem with this statement was that it could suggest to some crazy person out there an approval of some very crazy act.

Let's remember that Obama has excellent security and is loved by the people around him and even the crowds around him. He is not a tremendously controversial candidate in the way the Kennedys were.

11. I agree ... he's playing this perfectly
He's fully aware of how angry his supporters are, so
he can take the high road while we shake our fists on
his behalf.

14. Exactly. And that is how it should be.
He holds all the cards. That remark simply changed Clinton's odds of winning the nomination from 0.001% to 0.0001%

It is better that she hang herself with her own rope. And I might add that I am speaking metaphorically here. Unlike Senator Clinton, I don't advocate assassination or suicide for political candidates.

7. He has every right to be angry and contentious, but he isn't. Can folks here at DU
at least TRY to follow his example? He's being a leader, he's focused on the GE, his "eyes are on the prize."

The more we wallow in the Hillary stuff, the better McCain's chances get. IT is obvious that Obama gets it. It's time for DU to get it too...

I admire his restraint, but I'm not "putting it behind us," and I hope the secret Service isn't, either.

Remarkably brave, too.

19. Classy and presidential
Obama was my third choice, but I have been much impressed by his high-road responses to some contentious issues.

And his speech on race is the best speech I've heard in 15 years at least, probably longer.

20. If it was a mistake, of course "we should put it behind us"
And I DO think it was a mistake.

I'm an Obama supporter and have been a strong one for some time. Hillary Clinton was my last choice for Democratic nominee. I haven't trusted her for a long time. That said, she has done some very good things as Senator, she has a level of competency and she has been a loyal Democrat (unlike Lieberman). She is desperate, seeing a lifelong ambition slip away; she is justifying to herself what has become a quixotic quest. It was an "unfortunate" remark; but it was a mistake not an intentional threat or anything else.

Give her space to salvage herself, to reclaim and redefine and she may yet be part of the positive force reshaping the country. Villify her, turn her into Lieberman lite, and she will be but one more piece of wreckage from the Gingrich-Bush-Cheney-Rove-Baker-Alito-Scalia hatefest.

22. He is taking the high road and setting an example for us.
Let the rest of us shake our fists and be very angry about this.

It's like looking at a hand grenade and wondering who will pull the pin?

A very volatile issue and I'm relieved that Obama won't go there. He was very gracious.

Something I doubt if Clinton or McCain would do if they were in his shoes.

He is. She's out there saying and doing crazy shit and he gets asked questions about her. I think it's embarrassing. He is clearly the adult in this campaign and she the child.
