1) Sonia Sotomayor - Hispanic female - judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit
2) Elena Kagan - female - the current solicitor general who represents the government before the Supreme Court
3) Kathleen Sullivan - female (gay)
4) Diane Wood - female - federal judge in Chicago who taught at the University of Chicago at the same time future President Barack Obama was teaching constitutional law there
5) Harold Hongju Koh - Asian male

12. Life is like a Supreme Court Justice nomination...
You never know what you're going to get.

They pointed out that Souter was appointed by Bush I, and they, no doubt, were expecting a conservative to end up in the lineup as a result. But, as the news guy pointed out, they were surprised to find out that they managed to get somebody going the wrong way for them.

So, who's to say it can't happen again with Obama?

But it is important to remember that Pres. Bush I did not have a commanding partisan majority in the Senate to confirm, so he had to pick someone a good number of Democrats would buy off on.

President Obama will not be constrained to the same extent because he starts with a much larger advantage. He will have to keep Spectre and the blue dogs on board, but just barely. So he will not be able to go far left, but solid left should not be a problem.
