Hat tip to a favorite blog, The Progressive Puppy, for this video and some comments about it.

Key words: Taxpayer funded.

Another Abstinence Clown in Town... taxpayer funded, of course!

You may recall the $800,000 "chastity clown" Derek Dye whose act involved pulling handkerchiefs out of his nose and comparing condom use to juggling machetes. High school students were in awe of his lameness while U.S. taxpayers - you and I - paid his salary.

Well, it seems there's another abstinence jester reaching out to America's schoolchildren - and this one is also being supported by your hard-earned tax dollars. Keith Deltano, a self-proclaimed "Christian comic" and former Tough Man competitor, is even more unhinged than the dubious Derek, if that's possible. The "classroom entertainer" preaches abstinence to youngsters using the old tried and true fundie formula of shame, fear, and misinformation. He distorts facts in order to convince students that practicing safe sex is a bad thing. If you can make it to the end of this video you'll get to see Deltano try his hand at rapper "swagga" - and fail miserably.

More at the You Tube link:

Keith Deltano is a " sex ed comedian", paid by abstinence-only groups receiving federal funding.

And lest we think this is just a Republican issue....don't forget what happened during our 2007 Democratically controlled congress.

Democrats increased funding for abstinence only training in public schools

"The Democratic leadership of the House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Service, and Education (LHHS) Sub-Committee set science and commonsense aside by increasing the funding for discredited abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. Despite a congressionally mandated report that found these programs do not work to help teens delay sexual initiation, House leadership allocated $141 million (an increase of $27.8 million) to continue feeding America's young people misinformation.

No more clowns teaching abstinence only failed stuff with our taxpayer money.

3. That "gangsta" wannabe should ask the Boomer generation how well abstinence only works.
Edited on Sat May-02-09 05:25 PM by patrice
That's what we got for sex-ed, IF we got sex-ed at all, when we were teenagers.

How many of us Boomers "had" to get married; what's the divorce rate in our generation? Yep, idealistic romantic ideas come true if you just stay committed to them, so if they don't come true it's your fault for not being committed enough. Anyone can have enternal love If you sacrifice enough and you'll just forget about what you gave up for "love".

10. My kids (who are about 5 years older than you) were subject to the Good Touch Bear.
My sons laughed at him endlessly. Number four son took his "Don't touch me here" song to incredible lengths of bad taste. He was in fourth grade at the time, and actually sang it to the Good Touch Bear. The bear was in a full costume, but my kid said that the bear nearly lost his breath laughing so hard at the song. Even the mascots know they are full of it, but the idiot in the OP seems to be buying the whole package.

notice he uses some kid from the audience as a prop tool, who everyone probably likes, and gets them to focus on the propaganda he's spewing - sadly, when kids are alone they're going to make decisions to or not have sex.

And this guy is actually making them think in some ways "what's the point with condoms, they don't work anyhow"!

19. Yes, Federal tax dollars are going to clowns....literally. Another video
another clown.

This one kept getting taken down at You Tube, so this Amplify Your Voice website put it back up at their site.

Amplify your voice

Yes, literally clowns. And not just any clowns. Clowns who teach middle schoolers sex education!

The good folks at the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland were kind enough to send this info to me touting the work of one Derek Dye, the latest in the long, funny and sad line of abstinence-only sex education heroes. Dye uses his juggling clown schtick to draw the middle school kids’ attention, and then… Wham!

“Having sex before you are married is just like juggling machetes!”

“Sex before marriage will destroy all of your life’s dreams!”

Check out this must-see video of Dye at work in a middle school classroom:

(For the second straight time, Derek Dye and the New Life Center have asked that the video be taken down (first YouTube, now on Amplify), as they don't want other people outside of their abstinence-only funding circles to know what kind of fraud they are perpetrating on the American taxpayers and school kids in Ohio. After this notice, we linked to Derek's site where the video was still located, but he has now taken the video down from his own site, as well. Because our tax dollars are going to this nonsense, and because such funding puts the sexual health of our youth at risk, we are putting the video back up here as a public service.)

Yes, he juggles machetes. :eyes:

More:

As clownish as Dye’s words may sound to you, they are unfortunately not rare ones for young people to hear in classrooms all over the country. Thanks to George W. Bush and a complicit Congress, we have spent $1.5 billion to fund abstinence-only until marriage sex education in our public schools. And yes, that money goes to people like Derek Dye, as he is employed by the Elizabeth New Life Center that received a $800,000 CBAE grant in 2007 to promote abstinence until marriage. His qualifications? A “Bachelor of Fun Arts” from Barnum Bailey Clown College, and an abstinence educator certification that can be purchased for $50.

So… what’s wrong with abstinence-only until marriage sex education? Abstinence-only programs censor information about contraception and condoms; make moral judgments students may not share; stigmatize and shame students who have already had sex; and discriminate against GLBTQ students who can’t legally marry. These programs often encourage stereotypical gender roles, use scare tactics, blur religion and science, and contain factual errors, like saying that HIV can be spread through sweat and tears.

And using condoms is like juggling machetes…

30. oh yeah.
standard practice in Texas. Paris, Texas to be exact. We were always having these so called programs that were nothing but thinly veiled attempts of proselytizing.

I will tell you of one:

this had to be 1990/91. we had to sit through a dumb play at the theater arts building at North Lamar High School, about this kid who wanted to get into his girlfriend's pants. He took his girlfriend to a party, got her to drink a single beer and take a couple of hits off of a joint. The next day she became a full blown heroin addict and gave birth to a drug addicted kid 8 months later. I am not making this up.

The best part of the whole play?

Lead Actor: "Why do we do this??? Why are we so consumed with sex????"

Kid in the audience, out loud: "Dude, everybody's horny!"

The entire audience bursts into laughter and the play came to an abrupt end.

39. yep....
Oh i know.

I knew at the age of 17, that all of the facts and figure they were spewing were wildly inaccurate. Of course the uninformed bought it, hook, line, and sinker. The sad thing was that we had a HIGH teen pregnancy rate in Lamar County at that time. I would assume it's still that bad.

Nobody had access to condoms. Nobody had access to good information. It was assumed that you wouldn't have sex until you were married, so hey what do you need condoms for??? If a teen girl became pregnant, then she was simply labeled as a dirty whore with no morals and she deserved what she got.

(the following is not meant to insult any of our GLBT friends here on DU or elsewhere, however, this is an attempt to portray how rampant ignorance was in a small conservative Texas town.)

Nobody had the right facts on AIDS, or HIV. It was a widely accepted fact (at this point in time) that you could get HIV by sitting on a dirty toilet seat and mosquito bites. It was also widely accepted that AIDS was god's punishment "for all them homer-sex-yuls", thus fueling the fire for more violence against the GLBT people in that shit-hole place.

I got into an interesting argument with a preacher around this same time in that town when he parroted the southern baptist line about AIDS being god's punishment. I had read up on it extensivley at the time so i pointed out the scientific fact that cases of HIV infections among lesbians were quite rare. That didn't set too well with him and he then tried to "save" me, because i didn't think like he did.

oh the happiest days of my life indeed......

25. I strongly feel it is the parents responsibility to educate anyway . . .
When my son was small and the "Good Touch/Bad Touch" program was brought to his school, I opted him out of it. I didn't care what they thought at the school and I'm sure that they did, but this was my responsibility as a parent, not theirs. Maybe that is part of the reason why I have home schooled our son for many years. I have never thought it was the governments responsibility to teach sexuality education to children because it is not an amoral issue. Parents need to impart their own value system to their children. My feeling is that I do want our son to be abstinent until marriage or at least until he is in a committed relationship that seems to be heading that direction. But I have also talked to him about using protection. We live in a small town and the area has many, many teen pregnancies. My son is one of the few in his age group that has not fathered a child. I am proud of him for choosing not to get into a sexual relationship at this point in his life (he is 19). He does truly reflect our values and belief systems and that shows I have done my job as a parent. The government does not make a very good parent on the other hand and they need to stay out of trying to do so.

32. AIDS Taskforce Criticizes Use of Taxpayer Funds to fund these abstinence clowns.
Here is the html link, with the pdf link at the top.

http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:rDy5wNxDH8gJ:www.aidstaskforce.org/ASSETS/133DBC4FDCFA48C0BB404EFC74679399/Press%2520Release%2520--%2520Elizabeths%2520New%2520Life%2520Center.doc+Elizabeth+New+Life+Center&cd=10&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

"CLEVELAND, OH—In January of this year, the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland (ATGC) criticized an Ohio abstinence-only-until-marriage organization for using, literally, a “clown” to teach abstinence to middle school youth. The ATGC was “deeply concerned” that Elizabeth’s New Life Center, an Ohio organization which receives nearly $800,000 a year in federal abstinence-only taxpayer support, took a “paternalistic” approach by utilizing an individual whose only qualifications were a “Bachelor of Fun Arts” from Barnum Bailey Clown College, and an abstinence educator certification that can be purchased for $50. (A copy of that individual’s presentation, supported through federal grants, can be viewed here; scroll down and click on the video player: http://www.amplifyyourvoice.org/u/AFY_Joe/2009/2/4/Tell-President-Obama-send-out-the-clowns.) In the meantime, despite widespread protest, “Derek” the “Abstinence Clown” continues to offer presentations for Elizabeth’s New Life Center, with taxpayer support.

Now, the AIDS Taskforce has learned that Elizabeth’s New Life Center (ENLC) plans to host a controversial, far-right physician, again with the use of federal funds, to present an ideological viewpoint far from the mainstream and accepted science. The Taskforce has sent a letter to Elizabeth’s New Life Center requesting that the group cancel the presentation (see attached), or “balance Dr. Meeker’s presentation with the addition of a speaker representing more moderate, mainstream, scientifically-grounded positions.” ENLC has not yet responded.

“We remain troubled that Elizabeth’s New Life Center continues to use taxpayer funding to foster far-right conservative ideology, but not to foster good science,” said Jessica Gupta, the Taskforce Public Policy Director. “Even a brief review of Dr. Meeker’s writings gives cause for concern. And while we support the right of free speech, we oppose the use of government money to fund ideology over science.”

The AIDS Taskforce is also asking the Administration for Youth and Families of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, which funds Elizabeth’s New Life Center, to investigate the matter."

These clowns should not get taxpayer money.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/14/AR2007031400013.html?nav=rss_metro/va

"By Michael Alison Chandler
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, March 15, 2007; Page LZ01

Christian comedian Keith Deltano used fear, shame and misinformation to spread his message about abstinence to students at three high schools in Loudoun County this school year, according to a critique by an organization that advocates comprehensive sex education. The group reviewed Deltano's February performance at Dominion High School in Sterling. Its findings were shared Friday night at an event at George Washington University in Ashburn organized by Mainstream Loudoun and some churches.

The Ashburn event featured the movie "The Education of Shelby Knox," about a Christian teenager in Texas who becomes an advocate for comprehensive sex education, and a discussion afterward with the star of the film. Sponsors of the event said they wanted to start a public conversation about sex education in Loudoun.

"We were concerned that our kids were not being given the right information to make good decisions," said Kathy Hawes, president of Mainstream Loudoun, which advocates for the separation of church and state. The organizers of Friday's event said they have many questions about how abstinence lessons such as Deltano's fit into the Loudoun school system's Family Life Education, which has to comply with state standards.

"If it's part of the curriculum, they would have to follow certain guidelines. Teachers have to have specific credentials," Hawes said. "That's something that confuses us."

The critique of Deltano's performance at Dominion High was conducted by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States. It included criticism of his decision to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of condoms against HIV by dangling a cinderblock over a male student's genital area. The group said the drill gave a message of fear and shame and misrepresented statistics about condom failure.
