1. All my life, I thought his teachings, if we could manage to keep human nature on a leash,
would be the purest form of communism. The thought occurred to be at about age 8. So far, nothing much has changed my mind. I sure think fundies who call me a communist are a hoot.

3. I always thought of Jesus as a socialist.

His love of the poor, his insistence that everyone is equal in God's eyes.

Take a look at the Lord's prayer

Thy kingdom come (Here now), thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Heaven here on earth, where everyone lives together because everyone is equal in God's eyes.) Give us this day our daily bread (food) and forgive us our trespasses (the word actually translates more like forgive us our debts. What more can a poor man want but food and no debt?) as we forgive those who trespass against us (As we forgive those who owe us.)

Jesus certainly was no Republicon. Forgiving debt is just not the Republicon way.

Imagine every time a Republicon says the Lord's prayer, he's saying he will forgive the debt others owe him. And they don't even know they are saying it.

5. Jesus of Nazareth was an apocalyptic prophet
One of those guys who walk the streets with signs that say "Repent! The end is near!". In his version of the apocalypse, the poor get lifted up, and the powerful are thrown down. (Also, all the people already dead have to be brought back to life and similarly rewarded/punished for their deeds and positions in life - no one escapes judgment). He did emphasize that we should love each other and treat people lower on the ladder with care and kindness, but he never really talked about an economic way of life.

Paul of Tarsus did, though, when he described communities of early Christians living with everything in common. But, this was early on, when people still believed the world was about to end. Fairly soon, they realized that life had to go on and the church began morphing into the traditional hierarchies of other institutions.

It's funny that such a long-lasting phenomenon has been built around two guys, Jesus and Paul, who were essentially wrong in their main message - that the end was near.

6. The Christian Right has los their way...
Under early Communism on Wiki...

"At one time or another, various small communist communities existed, generally under the inspiration of Scripture.<22> In the medieval Christian church, for example, some monastic communities and religious orders shared their land and other property (see religious communism and Christian communism). These groups often believed that concern with private property was a distraction from religious service to God and neighbor."

7. Catholicism has been running away from Jesus for a long time....
There is the film "The Offing Of The Christ", where Jesus is brutally murdered, but never, ever, ever allowed to say anything intelligible.

There is the insistence that Catholic Priests should be allowed to get away with child rape, both on the earthly and the heavenly level. The
cover up was run by Cardinal Ratzinger, and now the same person as pope is behind thwarting the arrest of known child molesters.

The Catholic Church is in a several hundred year long program to re-brand itself as the church that worships Mary. Mary has no expectations at
all, unlike Jesus.

"Jesus Is A Commie" is becoming a pretty prevalent Catholic Talking Point. I've heard it several times at work.

9. Thanks. I have been considering posting on this for the last
few days.

Acts Chapter 5 -- King James Version

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4. While it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost; and great fear came on all of them that heard these things.
6. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
7. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
11. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

So, the early Christians were indeed socialists -- or hippies. They lived in communes and shared their wealth. The monasteries of the Catholic Church are also like communes or small socialist societies.

11. Setting the records straight when it comes to Jesus' teaching is not easy to do.
Have you seen the Jefferson Bible? I have not read all of it, but I have a copy. It focuses on the teaching of Jesus, the words of Jesus. Jefferson tried to get the right translation. If you haven't seen it, you might want to check it out.
