Video footage obtained by Al Jazeera appears to show US soldiers being encouraged to spread the message of their Christian faith among Afghanistan's predominantly Muslim population despite US military regulations that expressly forbid "proselytising of any religion, faith or practice".

2. This problem is much deeper than "W"
I am sure it goes back much further...When I was in basic training me & two other guys actually had to clean the "latrine" since we chose not to go to church of any kind on Sundays. Pimpin Jesus was nothing new to me considering I grew up in Georgia so I never thought much about it. Our country has a huge weakness and it is religion. A twisted religion considering the dead guy most everyone worships was about peace, love for others & helping the poor, elderly and disabled...3 characteristics not found in most American Christians.

Wow, this is really depressing. But as long as it's on Al Jazeera instead of Fox News it will be ignored, or labeled as terrorist propaganda.

12. As Christians, they would probably use Acts 5 : 27-29 as their basis of argument
Edited on Mon May-04-09 10:07 AM by AspenRose
Saying that they ought to obey God rather than men.

But to that I would counter with Hebrews 13 : 17, which roughly says Christians are to obey their leaders and submit to authority, because those in authority will have to give an account for their actions....

In other words: The military and indeed, the country has to give an account for what these zealous Christians are doing in our name.

If these folks want to proselytize, they should quit the military and become missionaries. Raise the money and do it themselves instead of representing the United States and using the taxpayer dime. That in and of itself is dishonest (using taxpayer money to proselytize). Especially when we are a country of atheists, agnostics, Pagans, Muslims, Jews, Christians, etc.

I can tell you from personal experience I know of at least two people who are graduates of the Air Force Academy who don't see a problem with this. I think the Academies hold a lot of responsibility for allowing this kind of philosophy to run rampant in the armed forces.

13. And we'll be asked to "support them" when the Taliban punish them for breaking the law
Just as everyone got all hot and bothered when other missionaries went over to proselytize in defiance of the law.

Edited on Mon May-04-09 04:22 PM by booley
That the US was using it's military might to forcibly convert them and destroy Islam just like Al Que-da claimed in their videos.

Well I am glad we put that myth to rest. I am sure this won't help terrorist extremists recruit at all.

These soldiers just want to go among the afghan people while carrying guns and have a little talk with them. Nothing sinister seeming about that!

17. Mullen asked about today
May 04, 2009
Soldiers distributing Bibles to Afghans?

The following video caused quite a stir around the Pentagon today after al Jazeera reporter asked Adm. Michael Mullen about it at a press conference. It shows soldiers at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan collecting Bibles translated in Pashtun and Dari to distribute to the local population.

Here is the chairman’s response:
QUESTION: Al Jazeera has broadcast footage of U.S. servicemen at Bagram with Bibles printed in Pashtu and Dari, and those servicemen talking about distributing those Bibles to Afghans. We don't know if any of them were distributed.

What's your reaction? And what is the military going to do about this?

MULLEN: My reaction is two-fold.

One is that I'm not aware of the details of this, and certainly want to know more about it. Secondly, it certainly is, from the United States military perspective, not our position to ever push any specific kind of religion. Period.

25. Don't worry, the vast majority are either too tired or too busy to give a f*** about evangelizing.
If you bring a bunch of people who are working on a military mission and deprived of beer and porn mags. Then you sure aren't gonna gain favor by piling on the evangelizing mission for them. One thing that was on my mind in Iraq after a 12-14 hour shift and e-mailing my family & gf was one thing, SLEEP!
