This is the preview for a new WE TV show, I Want to Save Your Life.

Not only is this creepy, it's just plain wrong in so many ways. Do we really need ANOTHER television show that tells women they are ruining their lives because of what they put in their mouths?

First of all, this guy is like a stalker, following her around, monitoring her. He's creepy beyond belief. Secondly, this once again, for the millionth time perpetuates the myth that everyone who is overweight is secretly and guilty sneaking ice cream sundaes. We should know by now that weight is much more complex than that. Thirdly, this shit is just sensationalist. I want to save your life? This woman does not look like she is at risk of dying because of a few extra pounds.

Also, why is it always skinny white guys who have discovered the secret of weight loss and are going to teach it to women?

5. It's pretty obvious that her husband invited this guy into the home.
The cops have better things to do than fuck around with this bullshit.

8. If that guy were my husband
he'd be looking at divorce papers right now after some bullshit like that.

2. creepy as hell
I hate shows like this and What Not To Wear, that prey on making women feel inadequate and exploiting what they do in private by putting it in front of a national audience.

Charles - thanks for getting that.

4. The women on What NOt to Wear are there voluntarily. This woman appears to have
been stalked surreptitiously (or a reenactment of same). Big difference.

7. The What Not To Wear women are first stalked.
They usually (with one exception) appear then on the show after getting a $5,000 bribe - but except for a few episodes when they did volunteer, mostly it's their friends or coworkers requesting that someone from the show stalks them, filming their asses (literally) without their knowledge. Sometimes their friends bring the camera crew in to film inside their bedrooms or closets without their knowledge or permission.

15. My statement was correct.
"The reality show premise is simple: friends and family members nominate a candidate that they consider poorly dressed and ask the show to make over the "fashion victim." Fashion Police Stacy London and her partner, Clinton Kelly (or Wayne Scott Lukas in the first season) ambush the candidate ..."

18. Yes, I meant I was wrong. You are right.
Sorry for the confusion. I just hadn't had enough exposure to the program. The few that I saw seemed to have volunteered themselves for the makeover...I was responding on that basis...

19. Ah, I was confused - sorry!
My husband and I have had "the talk" where it was clear that if he is ever tempted to nominate me, he can just skip that step and go straight for filing for the divorce. I figure better to get that out in the open so he doesn't get a surprise himself. :)

21. No problem with us here. We're just trying to hold on to our health and our
financial stability.

I have a real problem with an abdominal hernia that was NOT cured by surgery. It was a bad surprise and I have real problems getting clothes that fit. My husband has been most helpful to me so I am not unhappy here.

At least, that is a relief...

22. I think I saw that thread
sorry to hear about your troubles.

My husband's been through three hernia surgeries - the first when he was still an infant, the others fairly recently. I still cringe every time he lifts something heavy, which is often. :(

23. It is very depressing to me, to be so malformed. I hate it.
However, that is what it is. I may revisit it later, in a couple ofyears. In the meantime, I have had to jettison most of my clothing because it simply doesn't fit. So that is another expense I don't need just now.

I don't lift much of anything anymore. I just hate the idea of it, since shoveling snow is what really brought this on...

3. And why don't they stalk overweight men?
If this guy is only interested in "saving" women from themselves he might as well be wearing one of the disgusting "No Fat Chicks" t-shirts (which I once saw stretched over a beer belly that made the guy look like he was about to give birth to sextuplets. He didn't look like the type who would understand the irony of it.)

28. No, but these people probably agreed to it.
It looks staged. If people want to change their habits, it's their business and they don't need to be on a show to do it.

29. Yes, it does look staged, definitely.
But still, the premise for this show is really...just...inappropriate.

30. Yeah, but there have been worse
There was some show on TLC maybe called something like "Honey, We're Killing The Kids" and some nutritionist "intervened" and used scare tactics, like how hideous their kids would look as adults, to get the family to "change their ways." Parents should of course encourage their kids to eat healthy and be active, and resources should be available to help them with this, but the TV shows are just exploiting them.

Did she agree ahead of time to be secretly filmed? Or was that done without her knowledge?

20. Or ... how about not "going after" anyone?
Instead, make an offer to just help people lose weight for free if they want the help without exploiting them in the process?

26. The funny thing is that I know a few skinny guys
who eat more than most of the fat people I know.

I have one friend who eats a lot but spends three hours a day in the gym. I tell him it's just Yuppie Bulimia. It would be much quicker to just puke up what he eats rather than jog 10 miles on a tread mill.
