8. Hasselbeck has become a talkingpointer...
All Hasselbeck wanted to do was talk about Nancy Pelosi--which is a stupid red herring.

Yes, Pelosi lied. Just like Ventura said, they're all in on it. Dems and Rep.

The Republicans love to throw out, "Well hey, the Dems are in on this too" to kill the entire message.
They're hoping that the Dems sitting out in American will join in on the fight, stick up for Pelosi
and engage in a fight that distracts from the core issue: Our government tortures.

Are we that dumb? Are we that simplistic and partisan?

The Republicans are hoping so.

Every time you start talking about Bush/Cheney accountability for torture, they scream, "Nancy Pelosi!!!".

Ventura said the right thing. So what. She's in on it. They all are. What's your point?

33. Whether she lied or not is NOT the point!
The point is that the policy that was PUT IN PLACE by Cheney and Bush (*NOT* Pelosi) was illegal, and these folks should go to jail for it. Now how complicit Pelosi was in covering up and going along with their actions is a separate issue, and if she's found to have been complicit in it, then let's take her down too. But just because a Dem's also involved doesn't mean the Rethugs can get off scot free Hasselback! She sounds like a petulant child screaming "Well Nancy did it too!!", as all Rethugs are when they get caught doing something wrong.

Kudos to Jesse. It's folks like Jesse that might be a threat in 2010 and 2012 if the Dems don't get their act together and stop being soft on these Rethuglicans at the expense of following our constitution or truly rescuing our country from its mess now.

If you get people like he, Paul Hackett, and other strong *NON-corporatist* moderates banding together that put out a true moderate message, they will be a threat next election, and I might just join a group like that, even if they don't have all of my left of center issues in lock step with mine. If they hit the important ones, like taking corporate America power DOWN, they'll get my vote then! Tearing out corporate power (public campaign financing, instant runoff voting, single payer healthcare, restore the middle class, etc.) is the necessary starting point to restoring a government that answers to the people (left or right of center). We need to fix that first, and it seems neither of the major parties is ready to do that yet! Dems should be, but if they aren't they WILL be vulnerable to someone like Ventura later (whether many here like him or not).

36. I do have a problem with that too, but these issues shouldn't be conflated...
Just because Pelosi might have been complicit and that might have explained her resistance to impeaching Cheney and Bush, doesn't make Cheney and the others LESS guilty of being the authors of these crimes.

Pelosi might be guilty of helping with the coverup, but that's a separate issue and we should look at it separately. But the priority first should be to pin down who was guilty of the crimes of torture. If you don't prosecute them or find them guilty, then how can you go after someone for lying about a "non-criminal offense"? First things first!

I still think if Pelosi had done the proper thing and put together articles of impeachment against these bums, they wouldn't have had a leg to stand on in accusing her of being "in on this". There's no way they could have made any such charges stick then. She's paying for her neglect now, and quite frankly many of us here don't feel much sympathy for her in this area.

150. There's NO way anyone could have come forward
about what the last administration had done. Anytime anyone tried they were just ignored or flamed. Bush Co. did what they wanted when they wanted. That was their game plan for times like now when it comes out that congress was briefed. Now it's not about what they did then... it's about the fact that congress knew and didn't say anything... "Oh, look how bad Pelosi is", don't look back over there... keep looking at Pelosi... big distraction...

but the man makes sensible arguments. There is none of the talking point bullshit you get with most politicians and pundits, and Ventura definitely has the best interests of the country - at least as he sees it - in mind. You don't have to agree with everything he says, but at least listen to him. A lot of times he makes sense, and he often makes the people with whom he disagrees look like idiots.

Tell me what it is he says that you think is looney. The media is great at framing Ventura in this manner, he has never said or written anything I have seen that could be constituted as looney. Just because he is somewhat unortodox (meaning he isn't like every other easy to read politician or pundit) he is painted as looney by the media. It's sad that people fall for it.

I don't mind her so much, you have to take her for what she is and what she's there for. She's fine when they have musicians and actors on etc, but she's way over her head on anything that takes some critical thinking. Which is pretty evident here.

107. I think the dopiness of the hosts is part of the point of The View.
America has a strong anti-intellectual streak, and media and politicians prop up the line that everyone's opinions are equal and that intellectual accomplishment and special expertise are at best unnecessary and at worst signs of dreaded elitism and arrogance. So, having dopey teevee hosts validates dopey viewers, doubly dopey in the daytime slots.

But I'll give Ms. Hasselbeck a pass -- she's just doing her dopey daytime job, and more importantly she's as cute as the day is long. I mean, she's adorable. I might prefer if she were a better-versed righty, if a righty she must be, but really, she'd seem terribly out of place in dippy daytime teevee land if she arched her eyebrows learnedly and made trenchant remarks revealing a profound understanding of deep conservatives like Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn. The "Viewers" serve to make dopey ill-informer daytime teevee watchers feel adequate to judge on the great issues of the day, without really seeking an education.

138. Excellent observation...intelligently stated!
"America has a strong anti-intellectual streak, and media and politicians prop up the line that everyone's opinions are equal and that intellectual accomplishment and special expertise are at best unnecessary and at worst signs of dreaded elitism and arrogance."

Each of the "good ol' boys" down at the local guitar store in my tiny town knows with absolute certainty that he is more intelligent, experienced and able than anyone in government. And, each can "quarterback" the Dallas cowboys better than the coach. Especially on Monday. After many years of attempting reasonable debate, I've quit trying to interject observations and counterpoints to broad brush statements such as "They're all crooks!" I know that any one of those friends would do whatever they could for me, and me for each of them. So, I merely opine, "You're fuller of tripe than the inside of a cow." Peace is thus maintained, but at the cost remaining starved for reasonable conversation.

Thank you for the clarity of your poignant statement.

144. I get your point but the real reason she's there is: you
"more importantly she's cute as the day is long." And a pass is given. Because adorable to many people out weighs all things, such as her open bigotry and contempt for minorities she does not like.
So all the high blown theory is also adorable, but no pass. She has a job because people prefer cute to correct. Because people still find her adorable even when she says horrid things. She's there because of the tingle, and the pass that is handed off due to the tingle.
The rest is great stuff for term papers, but media hires by the tingle. Some folks may need a paragraph to rationalize the tingle, but it still comes down to a pass for bein' adorable, a pass you'd not be giving to a non adorable woman or to a man with the same opinions.

158. I think you're missing a very salient point.
It's a given that almost all daytime teevee hosts are going to be particularly vapid even by the usual network teevee standards (which takes some doing), so if at least a host is cute, that's a plus. It should be clear that this pass is so highly qualified as to be comical. Also, I have never once watched an episode of "The View" on the tube, but like many later catch an occasional replayed snippet or segment that others find notable.

Edited on Mon May-18-09 05:00 PM by Tx4obama
So now Hasselbeck is promoting 'future' torture crimes...

Video at:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/18/hasselbeck-tells-huckabee_n_204837.html

Excerpt:

"The View's" Elizabeth Hasselbeck joked that Nancy Pelosi should undergo enhanced interrogation on Fox News' "Huckabee" this past Saturday.

Hasselbeck: "It's certainly disappointing, I think to try to diminish or intelligence agencies... And you know whether she's lying or not - I don't know. Maybe she needs to a little enhanced interrogation to figure it out... I'm just throwing it out there!"

I'm delighted that he's speaking out on the torture issue, but make no mistake, Jesse is always about Jesse first and foremost. He's doing this as much for the fact that it buys him attention as he is for "principle".

83. I listened to a Ventura interview on Dan Carlin's politics podcast...
When Dan announced Jesse Ventura I was unenthused, but the Governor who ain't got time to bleed was horribly disgusted by the Bush administration, he said it was the worst he'd seen in his lifetime. He clearly hates anybody who signed off on torture and called it shameful, so I found out that for the first time ever I was agreeing with nearly everything Jesse Ventura said.
So I was wondering what it would take for Jesse and I to get on the same page, and, well, there ya go.

101. I can't believe EH is allowed on this show or any other.
It's not her viewpoints - which are abhorrent and completely devoid of any logic or scrutiny - that cause my disbelief. It's that she's such an empty vessel and cannot defend any position she takes.

Pwning EH is no accomplishment, but don't let that diminish the truth Jesse Ventura speaks. Like Dennis Kucinich, he does not shrink for anyone. Anyone - let alone a politician - who would issue the following quote doesn't pander to anyone:

"Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers. It tells people to go out and stick their noses in other people's business. I live by the golden rule: Treat others as you'd want them to treat you. The religious right wants to tell people how to live."

It's not to contribute to discussions with sound logic. She's not a coherent debater. Just as the 900 pound fat lady at the circus isn't an agile trapeze artist.

Hasselbeck doesn't entetain with her talents. She is the crude circus freak. She entertains by flaunting the unabashed absurdity of her simple existence.

120. I second that. He and Stevie Wonder need to get a grip--
and cut that stuff off. Listen up, men, when your hairline starts at the crown of your head a la Michael Bolton, Jesse 'The Body' Ventura, and Stevie Wonder, it's time to

Let.

It.

Go.

No pony tails, no shoulder length, no braids with beads, no trimming the sides into a crew cut, and all that other stuff. You ain't got to go get no hairpiece, no implants--

Go bald, okay.

145. I see what you mean. Hee ...
My man Daniel Craig (ditto Lance Armstrong) has a hairline still somewhere around his forehead, albeit that it is swiftly narrowing.
But the others need to

Let.
It.
Go.

Just--let. it. go.

124. She obviously listens to right wing radio.
Hasselbeck spews rightwing talking points. That's all she does. She obviously doesn't understand how to think for herself and Jessie owns her because of it.

Ventura made too much sense for Hasselbeck, but she just keeps on insisting!

But I suppose it's her job to play devil's advocate.

126. K&R
Elizabeth is such an airhead. She simply repeats every Reich Wing talking point word for word. Maybe the view could have Rush Limbaugh as a regular. It would be the same as Elizabeth except he wouldn't be as attractive.

129. Gawd...I wish Hasselbeck would stop deluding herself that she's intelligent.
Someone should take away her GOP Talking Points Cliff's Notes and make her prove she knows what she's talking about.

147. But that's the whole point, she has no clue as to what she's talking about!!
"The View" should simply stop giving her a soapbox in which to spew her stupidity!

152. The View is a waste of airspace anyway.
But they realize that her stupidity probably accounts for half of the audience wanting to see what stupid thing Elisabeth will say today.

My point is, you can tell she's just parroting the lines without fully understanding what it is she's spewing.

133. BTW, what the hell is "PWNED"
If you wish to say "OWNED" just say it!! I'm finding these "cutsie" little variations like spelling typos of an English word quite annoying and very stupid. Now get off my fucking lawn!! Otherwise, great video!!

That was quite exquisite. One thing I notice about people in the West is that so many speak about things they are not qualified to speak about. They usually come off better in exchanges/debates by the sheer amount of talking they do and an insistence that they are right. However, as Jesse Ventura just showed, blowhards never come out on top when when they come up against people who know what they are talking about as they shine a mirror to their own stupidity and the blowhard does not like what they see.
Kudos to you, Jesse, kudos.

154. I get a certain amount of satisfaction
watching Jesse roaring out the obvious to these idiots. Even though he's weird, he doesn't back down, interrupts, and doesn't qualify responses. He's gotta drive right wingers crazy because he is imposing and speaks so directly.
