Memo to Senate Democrats: Force Republicans To Actually Filibuster

In an interview with the Young Turks on Friday, Senator Kent Conrad indicated that there was "growing consensus" in the Democratic Senate caucus to actually make Republicans stand in the well of the Senate and filibuster popular Democratic legislation.

Good. This is would be a welcome step and tactical change. No more simply allowing Republicans to defeat Democratic legislation just by holding a cloture vote. It is time to actually make Republicans carry out the filibusters they threaten when they vote "no" on cloture. If they want to use the threat of unlimited debate on issues like raising the minimum wage and providing mandatory time at home between deployments to Iraq for American troops, let's actually make them engage in unlimited, or at least nearly unlimited, debate on those subjects and see what the American people think.

When the Rethugs filibuster, each who speaks on the floor to keep it going will have to say why they're against giving the People a decent minimum wage, why they're against giving the military a fair, decent time off between deployments, etc.

And if the Rethugs choose to use their filibuster time to squawk about non-issues, such as "The Democrats are meanies", they'll still make the Democrats look good.

of the tactics of the pugs....anybody remember when the pugs were in charge and threatened to eliminate the filibuster and the dems, hair on fire, stupifyingly agreed to, in effect, not filibuster if they would just leave filibuster alone...(gulp!, jaw drop, how in the fuck stupider can you get)... all this at the steering of Joe Lie berman and we got two corporate fascist right wing S.C. judges out of it plus a lot of very crooked and treasonous rubber stamp legislation the corporate pugs were pushing through at the behest of idiot and his fascist cabal. It should be clear to anyone watching and listening that the pugs fight in the trenches and the dems clutch their pearls with a shriek, and a "why bother, its all just too much" and fall on the swooning couch.
