"Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez discusses his interview with UBS whistleblower Bradley Birkenfeld one day after Birkenfield’s Tax Day clemency request to President Obama. Birkenfeld is serving a forty-month sentence despite playing a key role in exposing the biggest tax evasion scheme in US history."

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7yI3Z_PgeU

Juan Gonzales' story in the Daily News:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2010/01/06/2010-01-06_unveils_bank_fraud_gets_jail.html">UBS whistleblower Bradley Birkenfeld deserves statue on Wall Street, not prison sentence

Barack Obama, who entered the White House promising all this change, should be hailing Bradley Birkenfeld as a modern-day hero.

He should erect a statue on Wall Street for this former banker for Swiss giant UBS who blew the whistle on the biggest tax-evasion scheme in U.S. history.

Instead of rewarding Birkenfeld, Obama's Justice Department is sending him to prison. He begins serving a 40-month federal sentence Friday for conspiracy and bank fraud.

2. last politician I knew who did that
ended up summarily executed by his own military. Ceausescu ran up Romania's debt in the 60s and 70s and tried to pay it off in the 80s by instituting extreme austerity measures at the advice of Wall Street bankers (the IMF). As a result my generation grew up in bread lines hating his guts and when we turned 18-20+ we were on the streets to protest against him. I am just hoping americans will do the same against the current oligarchs. There has to be a cleansing of society coming from the grass roots, and these folks have to be made an example for time immemorial so no one EVER tries this again. The longer americans procrastinate the harsher the economic and political environment will become until we'll end up in bread lines too.

Follow the link in the above post to sign petition. If he's pardoned soon, the chilling effect on others contemplating whistleblowing will be reduced.

Edited to add: As it is, Mr. Birkenfeld will be lucky to get a job as an officer of a credit union when he gets out of jail. His treatment has been outrageous.
