AssociatedPress — April 19, 2010 — At a campaign fundraiser for Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, President Obama faced a group of hecklers demanding to know what he was doing to get rid of the "don't ask don't tell" policy that prevents gays from serving openly in the military. (April 19)

1. I'm getting pretty sick of people's impatience
Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 01:01 AM by Tx4obama
In my opinion President Obama is doing the correct thing by having Congress vote to repeal DADT which will be permanent - instead of him signing an executive order which could be nullified by the next president that takes office.

It is sad that We The People can't have a bit more patience and support our president and his timetable, without gripping all the time!

3. It's sad that You the People with your rights
Get sick and impatient when We the People without your rights complain about it.

That's what's sick and sad.

4. Actually the military wouldn't allow me to serve either
because of my height.
So, even when DADT is repealed - people like me will still be excluded from serving.

12. Well then you, of all people, should be able to put yourself in the place
of a whole class and percentage of the population that has a few thousand fewer basic civil rights than you do.

5. Actually there IS a bill in Congress. There are reports that Obama's congressional liaison

is telling members not to vote on DADT this year. Given the upcoming elections not voting this year = it may not happen at all.

It's been almost 20 years. We've been patient enough.

8. Barney Frank has more or less confirmed this.
And Obama hasn't committed to repealing this year. In fact, Obama is now waiting for a "study" to be completed which won't be done until Dec. 1, AFTER the DefAuth bill is passed. Hence, no vote before the elections, no vote this year, and possibly no repeal for many years to come.

And of course, no executive order in the meantime because that would only be temporary. People would only "temporarily" stop losing their careers, hence we can't lift a finger.

11. I can't remember the two names off-hand... here's some related links
I did a search looking for the two senators that I read about but didn't see the articles... I'm thinking maybe one of them was Sen. Lugar that said it would be in the Defense Budget bill... I'm really tired right now and heading to bed. I'll look more tomorrow ;)

Here's some related links, but not the ones I was talking about, goodnight

"People have said publicly and privately that this is a good place for repeal to be placed," said one Democratic aide on the Hill. "It would be reasonable to expect that repeal might be in this year's defense authorization... But we aren't assuming anything yet."

How far we've come since last June when I first committed to you that I would do all I could to work toward repeal of the corrosive policy known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
Since then, I've worked hard to whip support for an amendment to temporarily halt the enforcement of the policy; I secured the commitment of Chairman Levin to hold the first Senate hearings on DADT, the first of which, I'm proud to say, was held early last month; and just last week, I was thrilled to stand with my colleagues as an original co-sponsor of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2010, which will repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and prohibit discrimination of servicemembers based on their sexual orientation.

13. Beats me why any gay American would want to get shot up defending a country that won't allow them to
marry whomever they want and that thinks of them as second-class citizens.

DOMA deserves to be abolished before DADT.

2. Good for them. The president can handle it
and he needs to hear it and so does everybody else that facilitated this insane policy.
