Summary: Cenk talks to conservative Jordan Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice on government, taxes, banks and more. Internally here in the studio we thought Cenk was too soft on this guest, but Cenk disagrees, pointing out that if he gets fiery with a guest people complain about that too (fair enough). At any rate, the best part of this interview is the last quarter when Sekulow blatantly defends the rich while admitting (R) wins are more important than a good economy for the middle class.

PS---Check out (and subscribe to) our new channel, . As the name suggests, it's all great interviews with members of Congress, Michael Moore, Arianna Huffington, Jesse Ventura, economists (William K Black, Joseph Stiglitz and Simon Johnson to name a few), Media Matters reps, various journalists, reporters and much more.

Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 08:42 PM by Nikki Stone1
$35K (which I have lived on) is working poor in LA.

4. There's a key point with the $250k thing.
The tax rates goes up for every dollar made AFTER the first 250k, so it's misleading to say that people making $250k is what's at stake. Not to mention http://www.consumerismcommentary.com/2009/02/23/250000-tax-rates-and-you/|this>:

In other words, tax rates may go up between 2 and 4 percent for the country’s higher earners. So, who does this affect? It’s not “people earning more than $250,000 a year.”

The answer is: people with a taxable income of more than $250,000 a year. Taxable income is your adjusted gross income minus your exemptions and either itemized deductions or the standard deduction. And if you’re earning that much every year, you’re probably itemizing.

5. $250,001, then.
But you'll have to tell me where you got your information or put the real link in your post, I don't click on blind links.

7. Depending on the browser you're using the link should appear at the bottom of your screen
when you let your mouse hover over the hyperlink. I use Firefox and that's the case:

8. Thank you.
Nothing lights up on the blind link for me, so it's nice to have the explicit one.

6. And it doesn't negate my point, that 250K for a family in LA is middle class
Try living in LA on 35K like I did.

9. I'm living in LA.
I'm not gonna give away my income, but let's just say I'm insanely closer to 35k than 250k (or 50k for that matter). And obviously LA is enormous, as is my hometown of Chicago (and the surrounding suburbs). So, if you live in Beverly Hills (or the Gold Cost in Chicago) I'm sure 250k isn't much, but there are also plenty of areas where one can live quite comfortably at 250k. Of course if the expectation is that mom and dad both drive a (pick one) BMW/Mercedes/Lexus/fill-in-the-blank expensive car and so on, then yes, to maintain that standard of living...well, you get the idea.

It's all relative. At any rate, I'm fine with raising the bracket at which the top marginal tax rate kicks in, to say 3 million a year (with a large increase in the rate).

10. Ok, you and I need to talk, fellow Angelino
35K is behind the eight ball, no matter what part of the city you are living in. And that's with driving a used car (me), living in an apartment in a not so great area (me), and buying as much on sale as possible (me, again.)

So tell me 35K is comfortable? I'd love to move there. (Oh, and add gas to your expenses if you move me out to Victorville or Mojave. :) )

11. Oh, I totally agree.
35k is brutal! The 250k is crazy comfortable in relation to that.

:)

Don't hold your breath, though. ;)
