Video of what appears to be an explosion and flying debris taken by the BP live blowout cam around 8am ET.

To put it mildly: this "top kill" does not appear to be working.

This is quite dramatic. Looks like the ROV got blown back quite a bit.

Starts at 2:20-ish

1. That's not an explosion. The ROV just let go of the riser and
re-positioned itself. The plume looks bigger as the camera focuses on a higher and wider portion of it. PLus the movement of the ROV probably kicked some debris loose.

3. Yeah, it does look bigger, but it is hard to say
if that is becasue the BOP and riser holes are eroding to do sandblasting like effects of the blow out, or maybe the pressure from BP pumping in the kill pill, or might actually be less--lower velocity ejecta would slow down and fan out sooner and appear bigger. Without pressure data from the BOP (which BP has BTW, but we don't) we can't really say.

I hope the junk shot works, but right now I think the odds are fairly grim.

4. This is really disturbing video.
If this is true, what was a terrible situation before, is now incredibly worse. What is being shown now on tv?

5. I don't know. I am watching the live cams
Here: http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_internet/globalbp/globalbp_uk_english/homepage/STAGING/local_assets/bp_homepage/html/rov_stream.html

And Here: http://www.wkrg.com/gulf_oil_spill/spill_cam

Spewing like crazy. Not to mention all the debris being blown about in the vid in the OP.

Looks so much more violent than before.

12. Good grief! A lot has changed since I last checked the
wkrg feed a couple of hours ago.

When I went to monkeyfister this morning I was shocked at the photos posted after 1 and 3 this morning noting the deterioration that had taken place.

Good you are leaving the house. You really don't want to hear the live BP presser MSNBC is airing on their site. :grr:

13. This Is A World Emergency
Edited on Fri May-28-10 04:51 PM by Mark D.
Why isn't anyone 'in charge' (the prez, BP, the UN, anyone really) calling for Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell to try and help solve this? Why isn't every available tanker that can catch and filter the oil there or on its way? Why isn't every available navy helping put down containment booms. Why isn't all weapons manufacturing at a standstill while such companies from GE to Boeing are instead making the Kevin Costner filtration devices to have all of those available naval ships deploying? Where is the urgency? Does the rest of the world, and other major industry, just wait until oil is washing up on the shores of Europe and Africa?

By then it will be too late. I don't know if my ideas above would help, I have no clue how to stop this, or if its true there are other, possibly larger leaks. I just know that if every free hand was put to work in the world, we could find a solution sooner and clean it up sooner. We built coalitions of nations to war with other nations, can't we have our president reach out, asking for help where he can, demanding help where he's able to? It isn't enough to say 'only BP' can solve this. We can't trust them to do anything. There are hundreds of other oil companies pit there that could help. Where in the world is the rest of the world?

21. Nothing in the video supports the conclusions in the OP
All I see is the camera moving.

The ROV is clearly moving away while the flow stays the same - which would not be the case if it was an explosion that had caused it to move.

And then it appears to pan back to and into a higher point of the flow - where the plume is wider and individual pieces of debris more distinguishable.

The whole point of the top kill, as far as I understand it, is to shoot heavy fluids and debris into the stream - a lot of it coming back out and hopefully more and more sinking into the well, eventually clogging it. A plume full of debris would seem the logical result to me.

There is plenty of reasons to distrust BP and partners - and keep an eye on the development. But it might be a good idea not to leave it to experts to make conclusions based on web cam images from an ROV at 5000 feet in the process of an operation that probably close to none of us here has little clue about.

23. The camera moved - that was no explosion

The view moves to a broader part of the plume.
