The journalist seems to feel sorry for BP and what this spill is costing them.

I have no sympathy for them, they ignored safety measures in their quest for more profits.
If they spend every last dime of their monies on cleaning up this mess and reimbursing those who have been affected by their negligence, it still would not make me feel sorry for them.
In more than thirty years not a penny of profit has been spent on research to prevent or deal with this type of "accident". They are using the same methods that were tried and failed in 1979

They know that the cost of clean-up will not affect their bottom line and will continue business as usual unless we demand different.

The cost per day of the oil spill to BP so far has been $16 million. That number is dwarfed by the $66 million per day the firm made in profit in the first quarter of this year. Indeed, in 2009 BP's total profits were $14 billion. As CNN's Christine Romans notes, even if the cleanup costs were to rise to $14 billion, it would simply mean that BP went one year without make a profit, let alone losing money.

It's difficult to see what incentives there are for BP to operate in a safer and more environmentally conscious manner when the consequences for causing even such a catastrophic crisis as this one are so negligent.

by hiding the severity of this spill in order to do damage control.
This will enable them (if we allow it) to pay out as little as possible in damages.
