1. The funny thing is...
Ever since Utah and Texas passed concealed carry on campus, blood hasn't run on the streets. None of the fears the anti-gun crowd have crowed about have come to pass.

While I agree with Mike that its doubtful this will be any sort of deterrent to someone who has gone so far as to make that great leap to decide to mass-murder, the new laws certainly haven't caused any harm.

Concealed carry holders have no obligation to prevent a mass-murder, but there's no good reason they shouldn't be allowed to protect themselves, at least, on or off campus.

2. File that one under "fucked premises"
Are Texas and Utah campuses so violent and crime ridden that students have to be ready to shoot their way from the Math Building back to the Student Union?

3. Better to have and not need than to need and not have.
Goddess willing nothing ever happens and the guns stay concealed, no one is the wiser. No harm, no foul.

But on the off-chance that something does happen, when the police are 15 minutes (at least) away, its nice to think that someone might possibly intervene against a serious crime in progress, and possibly minimize the carnage.

I mean there's no excuse for Virginia Tech. Whenever you have a "gun free zone" its like shooting fish in a barrel. Imagine if someone -- ANYONE -- had been able to return fire? Even if they don't hit the perp, that might have been all it would take to cause him to stop his assault and flee.

Again, what harm does it cause for law-abiding students and faculty to be prepared, just in case?

By your logic, if a campus is not heavily armed, then mayhem and gunfire erupts.

5. No, not at all.
I don't deny that campuses in general are much safer than your average city street, if for no other reason than that there is usually a disproportionately heavy police presence there. But violent crimes do happen.

I would never deny, for example, a woman who has been raped (or wishes not to be raped) the right to defend herself against future attacks. Just because she happens to wander onto a campus doesn't mean she should have to disarm. For no matter how safe statistically they are, its no fun when you are one of the statistics.

7. What's RW about people being able to protect themselves?
Do you have smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher in your house? Why? The remote chance of your house burning down is far less than the chance of being violently assaulted in public.

Its all about preparedness, that's all.

It shouldn't be a left-right issue.

16. What exactly are you implying?
Plenty of Republicans (mostly in urban areas) support more gun control. Their dung stinks just as much as the rest.

Considering leading gun control groups like the Brady Bunch were founded by Republicans, I'd say your insinuation is way off-base.

8. Please Explain it to Me
I must be stupid because I simply don't understand why you would need a gun on campus? What are these gun toters expecting? Do they need to shoot down something to eat at lunch time? Are they expecting encounter baddies who will hijack their back packs?

9. I think its more about "why should campuses be any different than anywhere else?"
People carry concealed all the time in public without any problems. Why should special accommodations be made for campuses?

I mean, if it was a controlled access area like an airport where you have metal detectors to keep all guns out, that would be one thing. But campuses all have open borders, so there's nothing stopping bad guys from bringing them in, despite any proclamations of a "gun free zone."

Rapes and violent crimes on campus are rare, but they do happen. Even one preventable violent crime is one too many.

15. Yes it is, there are millions of concealed carry permit holders in this nation.
Edited on Thu May-12-11 04:57 PM by Kurska
I've heard somewhere a long the lines of 30-50% of all homes in the united states have a firearm.

Gun ownership and carrying guns are not abnormal or strange. Even if it was we don't outlaw things just because they are "not normal".

10. Well it's Texas
but apparently teachers are not as thrilled about it..can't say I blame them.

professors there have said they plan to include a clause in syllabi stipulating that students are not be permitted to carry guns into their classroom -- and they simply refuse to teach classes where students don't assent.

Open carry in Florida was killed for most citizens but for those with a CW. This came from republicans even though the new govenator has said he would sign it. Law enforcement were not for it. I see no need for students to be packing on their person on campus. If it has come to that we have a lot worse problems than the the open carry laws. Wouldn't send my kid to a college where this was acceptable.
