7. I would have had a lot more respect if he had kept that talk up during the 2008 election

3. McCain's time as a POW
affords him insights that his fellow duty dodgers simply can't fathom. That said, there's so many doings by this guy that make me wish he was still IN the Hanoi Hilton! He's an opportunistic buffoon who sways with the political winds like a tethered piece of toilet tissue.

5. If he would stay consistent in this vein
and stop aligning himself with teh stupid for expediency's sake, he'd be way more formidable.

But I thank him for snatching a notch in his party's fringe element this week because they all got distracted by the kock brothers.

8. Wingnuts will just turn on him and say he's not conservative enough
They have no compunction doing that to anyone not reactionary enough. They didn't really like him in the run-up to the 2008 elections, but when it came down to the wire on election day it was an obvious choice for wingnuts; Given the opposition.

In summation: Good to hear this from him, but just don't expect it to kick off any kind of epiphany and soul searching amongst the GOP.

12. I like that you use the word reactionary.
Back in the day it used to be used all the time to describe far right conservatives.

I think the term is even more fitting now because the reactionaries are not for anything,
they are just against anything that is different or liberal. They have no original thoughts
they just react to the opposition.

9. Don't like McCain, but he's right on this one and says it very eloquently.
It's against our deepest values.

10. McCain knows better.
This is why he eventually has to say this before his legacy is set in stone. We all know his decision for a running mate in the 2008 presidential election was disastrous. I'm guessing that McCain will move back towards his original positions before he retires. Perhaps even have a kumbaya moment on Jon Stewart's show. Hell, he might even move more towards the left before all is said and done. Afterall, he is getting to be one of the oldest Senators in Congress. His personal experience as a prisoner of war for over 5 years may be enough to mitigate the damage he and Palin had caused during the last election cycle. "May" being the operative word here...
