According to the officers, he "got out of his wheelchair" and "threw both of them to the ground". Fucking pigs.

39. Actually I'm surprised they didn't just grab this guy's camera/phone and
make it so this never showed up for all to see.
More and more of THAT happening.
Cops long ago figured out to take out the media first (like the Freedom Rider bus that showed up after the media people were lying bloody on the ground, their cameras smashed...)

25. During my college days, I exited a bar with a bottle of beer...
It was stupid, I admit.

A cop saw me. All he did was tell me to pour it out.

I did (in the gutter), and threw the bottle in a trash can. Nothing more happened.

It seems to me that should have been the case here...

Alcohol can be consumed in plastic cups in the streets of New Orleans and taken from club-to-club if the establishment allows it.

59. Same here in Lafayette. Of course, we have drive through
Daiquiri shops. We also have a lot of underage drinking. Goes with this culture, where crawfish and shrimp boils and beer are just fused together. Honest, folks, drive through booze in cups, plus, liquor, wine and beer are sold in supermarkets and drug stores, except, of course, on Sundays when it is covered up and not for sale. Eighteen year olds can go in bars, they just are not supposed to be served liquor, which sometimes works.

It might sound wild, but I doubt it's any worse than in areas where it is hidden. I do love Lousiana, especially down here in coastal Louisiana. It's a special place.

11. I seen this on reddit & commented already
But I'll say it again..

Someone has to draw a line somewhere. Filming an incident like this only does so much. When are people going to jump in & physically STOP it?

This is one incident among thousands of similar ones showing police abusing their 'authority' with more & more laws being passed limiting what you americans can do about it. (unlawful to film bad cops, can't protect yourself if they bust in your home with guns blazing, etc.)

Not to mention all the 'internal investigations' that whitewash the whole thing & either exonerates the cops or gives them a slap on the wrist.

I'm not exactly a violent person but I believe in making examples. Maybe a riot or 2 over incidents such as this is what's needed. Give a wakeup call to the 'authorities' to know THIS is the line they don't cross...or there will be consequences.

In my experience it's the only thing bullies understand.

17. Not a good plan at all
Right, wrong, or indifferent, the cops will pile on and escalate the situation all the way up to a riot. Their SOP requires them to. You can be summarily executed for "contempt of cop" in this country - it ain't right, but it's reality.

40. Love the name - don't agree with the advice.
Generally speaking in America violent resistance of a cop is a death sentence. Depends on the cop and circumstances but generally speaking you get violent and they get more violent back. Compared to Canada the US cops are like a military. They aren't cops so much as a strike force sometimes.

But your general point or "when is enough, enough?" is a good one.

Welcome to DU.

Edited on Tue May-24-11 11:59 AM by tblue37
people for anything at all these days, whether it is illegal or not. In fact, they even arrest people for nothing. I read recently about a cop who was unable to catch someone he was chasing. A group of teenaged boys who were watching the chase laughed at his inability to catch the person he was chasing, so he went over and beat down one of the boys and arrested him--I think the charge was obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties, or some such BS.

The cops in the US have become in many ways a huge, armed criminal gang. Yeah, yeah, yeah--I know not all are like that, and some are decent guys who risk their lives, etc., but as long as police departments and cops in general close ranks to protect the bad apples, they all take on the taint of rot.

brutality video, so I looked it up--and it is pretty bad, too. A cop repeatedly punches a 58-year-old woman in the face when they finally catch up to her (she had driven away when they initially tried to stop her). Turns out the cop has relations in high palces (public safety commissionaer cousin). Check this one out:

31. Cops are out of control
I know cops have dangerous jobs and many of them do it well, but there are so many videos now of cops stepping WAY outside of their authority that something must be done. Using that much force on a guy in a wheelchair is just insane. If anyone on DU attacked someone in a wheelchair like that and then had to stand before a judge, can you imagine the sentence you'd get?

43. The last couple of years,
we've seen big tough cops taser old people, children, and even a pregnant woman. I remember the video of a police officer dumping a guy out of his wheel chair at a police station because he wouldn't stand up. Then there was the big male cop who beat the crap out of a relatively small female still in her teens.

It feels like it is getting worse, but it could be because of the abundance of camera phones and video surveillance. Maybe it was always this bad.

This was 40 years ago, but then you could get a good paying job right out high school 40 years ago too, just before you got drafted to fight in Vietnam. So it goes.

LOOK Here, the cops have the right to subdue and arrest that drunkened belligerent sot in a wheelchair. Screw him. He mouths off, he carries on, bullying his way around in a motorized wheelchair he deserves to be confronted by the Peace Officers. His response is to be belligerent and difficult hiding behind his handicap status.

Cops have other important things to do and they ought not have to abide some drunkened asshole in a wheelchair with the citizenry calling the police demanding they handle this cretin.

I'm damned glad the cops treated him like any other drunkened derelict. His family should take better care of him rather than turning him loose to live by his own devices out on the street.

Next time I suspect the wheelchair cowboy will be less difficult and more accommodating when the cops approach him!

46. The Cops Have The Right
The police have a right to prevent gawkers from standing around drawing a crowd and making it all the more difficult for the police to perform their job. Doing so with cameras in hand is impeding the officers work and could instigate a riot. The police have a right to move any crowd back and away from them. Get used to it. It's for the officers safety.

We don't pay our cops enough to put up with the bullshit from the underbelly of society without having to put up with vigilante camera wielding cop monitoring assholes bent on interfering in the officers ability to discharge his duties. The cops don't owe bystanders their apology for doing their job nor getting their permission to discharge their duty.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

61. so says the tough guy..
until it happens to you.

There are tons of other non-violent ways to deal with situations like this.

as sulphurdunn (post 38) says:

"Once upon a time, the cops might have taken his beer and his wheel chair keys so he couldn't drive under the influence, or if they determined he wasn't totally shit faced, they'd have ask him how far he was from home (not far by wheel chair I suspect) and they'd have followed him home. This was 40 years ago"

What happened to this kind of response? seems like now the asshole bully cops outnumber the good ones...& the assholes just keep getting worse.

THIS is why more people are trying to record cops' activity...no 'impeding the officers work' about it.

And if the said business instigates a riot..the bad cops will have brought it upon themselves.

And who are you calling 'underbelly of society'? seems a wee bit too judgemental to me. are you sure you're posting on the right website?

Well, tough shit.

You and the cops will have to deal with that abuse - and it may be the hardest thing anyone has ever dealt with in the entire history of mankind - as long as cops are beating up defenseless people they should be looking after.

Every day there is video of cops acting far worse than the people they are arresting. They should be in jail - for a very long time.

53. How Do You Know The Circumstances
Here you are indicting the cops for doing their job and you don't know the background at all except what you gleen from the video. How the hell do you know, maybe the guy was a loud mouth drunkened wheelchair bandito, or a drug crazed wheelchair criminal with a rap sheet as long as your imagination, or that he didn't assault some old lady and race off in his turbo-charged wheelchair. It looks to me like he got what he deserved given the circumstances...a face plant and handcuffing is not cruel and usual punishment if that is the route you want to go to not cooperate with the police.

I'd hate like hell to have any of you on a jury. No cop would have a chance.

You owe your police a thank you not your condemnation. The police are under a lot of stress in this violent country of lawlessness from the Republicon National organization down to the the GOP foot soldiers.

72. The circumstances you submit are assumptions
You don't know what happened either. You're just projecting what you think was the case without knowing the truth.

And based on your assumptions that a black man in a motorized wheelchair that gets beaten down by police obviously deserved what he got because he's the underbelly of our society, I question your credibility.

What you don't know is that this occurred in Washington, DC. These aren't city cops but Metro transit cops. It happened in front of the U Street Metro.

The man was drunk, but public intoxication is not a crime in the Metro system. If it were then there would be a lot more arrests on Friday and Saturday nights.

The ONLY jurisdiction they have is inside the system, and since this occurred on the sidewalk, they were out of their jurisdiction.

70. Is this the new model of the Democratic Party "recruits"? Jackbooted thugs in blue instead of red?
Sounds like crips vs bloods to me.

Go vote for Sarah Palin and be done with it. I don't even want to be in the same political range as a fascist like you.

54. As usual, the video is cropped so it starts right as the cops do something questionable
Would be nice to see what led up to the arrest...

Here's the story.

http://washingtonexaminer.com/local/dc/2011/05/metro-investigating-cops-after-video-wheelchair-arrest-airs

The cope said he "fell out of his wheelchair."

Sorry, cops, he did not fall out of his wheelchair, no matter what occurred prior to the video.

Okay, now try to defend them.

60. Still would be nice to see what led up to the whole thing
Although it's pretty obvious the guy didn't "fall" out of his chair.

At least the article you linked provides a little context. Maybe the OP should have included it instead of just posting a descriptionless Youtube vid followed by the obligatory "fuck the pigs!11!!" stuff.

66. keep in mind
people need time to turn on their cell phone cameras. They aren't going to do it to capture every single thing. By the time they know they need to film something, the "beginning" of it is actually over. Furthermore, I find it amazing that they actually caught the dumping of the guy from the wheelchair!! I probably would have realized I needed to turn on my cell phone camera *after* that happened. So, I have to commend the person filming for catching this as early as he did.

Probably has had some experience with cops, to know to do this.

75. What you say is possible
But I still find it amazing that the video begins at the *exact* moment the cops grab the guy. It feels like it was deliberately cropped. Maybe it wasn't, but if it was then the cameraman has done a disservice to us.

68. It's irrelevant. I don't care if he screamed curses about their mamas.
He's sitting in a wheelchair and they walked up and dumped him out of his wheelchair. And you're little more than an apologist for abuse.

74. Yes, asking for the whole story is clearly "apologizing for abuse"
