John Edwards has been promising for months that if he wins the presidency, unless Congress passes a universal health care plan, he would strip all of its members of their own health care.
Today in Iowa, the Edwards campaign will begin running a television ad that reiterates that statement in a new 30-second spot, using footage from a stump speech.
“When I’m president, I’m going to say to members of Congress, and members of my administration, including my Cabinet, I’m glad that you have health care coverage and your family has health care coverage,” he says. “But if you don’t pass universal health care by July of 2009, in six months, I’m going to use my power as president to take your health care away from you.”
“There’s no excuse for politicians in Washington having health care when you don’t have health care,” he adds.
In February, Mr. Edwards first introduced his proposal for universal health care, which he says would provide coverage to the 47 million Americans without insurance. It would be financed in part by eliminating tax cuts on households earning more than $200,000 a year.
