1. Boy, these talk show hosts need their writers!
It's only too apparent after watching this clip. Conan has no more talent than I do with hosting celebrities. ACK!! Funny how we think these guys are such "gods of entertainment", when in fact, they are simply "human beings" with GREAT writers.

This audience was NOT ready for Real Time...lol. I do hand it to Bill though. He doesn't pull punches when he does his stuff. I'm not sure I buy in to everything he was saying, but he does make a lot of sense and he IS funny. (Whenever I think of comedians and whether or not they are funny, WHY does dennis miller always come to mind?)

4. That was a brain-dead audience...
...I think 99.9% of his comments flew right over their heads.

7. You know, what? I'm not but who cares, he was DEAD-ON!
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 09:28 PM by ihavenobias
I can't rec this clip enough (it should have more recs at this point although the overzealous PC police likely weren't thrilled with some of his comments), although Bill seemed a little tired, didn't he?

And forgot about that dopey audience that only understands fart jokes and explosions.

There's a good chance he was exposing many of them to truths they never otherwise would've been exposed to (same goes for what is probably a largely politically uninformed/misinformed/apathetic national audience)!

PS---It was interesting to see Conan's reaction, or rather non-reaction. He was trying very hard to be neutral and stressed at the end that the opinions in question were not his. While I find that to be a little annoying, I guess it's to be expected of someone in his position. He doesn't want to be fired from NBC. Don't get me wrong (for the record) I like him and think he's funny.

12. sure he was dead-on about the stuff he was talking about in that clip
He's a funny comedian, and makes some very interesting political points, but saying he would make a great president is just crazy. It's far easier to criticize those in government than it is to run one, and I wouldn't want Bill Maher having much to do with my government.

13. No, no, I never said I wanted him to be president!
I was just pointing out that while I don't always agree with him (usually b/c of some libertarian point he presents), I agreed with him 100% in this clip.

14. and I agree with you 100% on this
I was pointing out that he was a libertarian to the poster who said he would make a great president - I wasn't suggesting that you thought that.

8. OK, what's with the beards?
I noticed that Letterman had one to. Is it a solidarity thing with the writers?

10. Yes. They're being called "Strike Beards."
I don't know how that got started, but it seems to be a well-known thing.

16. the religious comments were too coulter like
The space God, schizophrenic, irrationale thing was a little too much, I'd like to think my Catholicism plays a big role in me being a democrat. Just a blanket insult isn't a smart or funny comment, its very Coulter like. And also for the record I am a huge Bill Maher fan and am very pro-gay marriage, hell I held signs for it outside the Ma. State House, but the core of my political views I'd like to think come from my bringing up being Catholic.

17. He may have been crude but...
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 01:16 AM by ihavenobias
I wouldn't compare him to Coulter.

Of course being a comedian who's not known for pulling punches, he wasn't going to deliver an especially respectful monologue on why he he strongly disagrees with the various religions.

I do think he could've worded it a little better and if he had, it would've had more impact. But I completely agree with his general point. I also think it's perfectly reasonable to question the rationality of ANY belief (religious or secular), and while the word schizophrenic seems harsh, it fits *if* you believe that otherwise rational and logical people throw logic and reason out the window for just this ONE thing in their lives.

PS---Where was the uproar when Mitt Romney said "It is as if they're intent on establishing a new religion in America - the religion of secularism. They're wrong."?

Answer: There WAS no uproar. The mainstream media largely thought the speech was BRILLIANT, or at the very least, ok. Even liberal commentator/columnist Eleanor Clift said (on The McLaughlin Group) there was nothing in the speech that would bother secularists. Keep in mind the conservative estimate is 20 million atheists/agnostics/secularists in the US, which is the single largest bloc of people after Catholics if I remember correctly.

Cenk Uygur made an excellent point when he wrote, --what if I were running for president and I said this-- "It is as if Romney is intent on establishing a new religion in America -- the religion of Mormonism. He is wrong."

Just imagine the ENORMOUS uproar that would result. Seriously, think about for a minute. Those two sentences would be EVERYWHERE, along with charges of hatefulness, intolerance, etc. The moral outrage would boil over. But when Romney says what he says? Crickets chirp.
