Anybody want to bet on how long it will be before the
corporate cry babies poke their stinky, sticky fingers in our
face and screw the Internet up?

These are the salad days, this is the Golden Age of the
Internet. Will we sit down and let ourselves be screwed out of
the freedom we have on the Internet like we did for our
privacy and the right to representation in a court of law?

Will we fall hook line and sinker for a sob story filled with
lies and deceit like we did for the War in Iraq?

Admit it! So far we've shown that we can be punked and punked
repeatedly. Let's not let it happen again. Let's not let
America become more like China and Pakistan. Stand up! Wake
up! Butch up! Make our public servants SERVE and stop wiping
their asses.

In part 2 I'll turn you on to a great Internet TV software
program so you can take control of the media.

1. I think the internet is the only thing
that the world domination, PNAC assholes really didn't figure on. As long as we still have access to it, their media domination and their message is on hold. I live for the day when their whole ideology is declared a detriment to humankind and condemned.

6. cool post...slight disagrement
I pretty much agree with the general sentiment here, but I do not buy the "Golden Age" angle. I think the complete opposite is occurring. Turning off "corporate garbage" is one thing, but if you are burying yourself in a small niche that makes you comfortable, you are not honing the skills or behaviors you will need to actually get real accomplishments. This is a serious danger to me, and I think the Bush years, the dumbing down of traditional media, and the inability to get accountability are possible (stressing possible) outcomes of Internet / Web 2.0

Unfortunately, I think the "golden age" of the internet was a long time ago, and is done.

I hope I am not being too critical. The reality is that some place like Free Republic would never bother to have a discussion like this, so I am grateful to be able to post here.

Points of reference for me : Beaudrillard, "The Amorality of Web 2.0", and McLuhan's Retribalism

Cheers.

7. Point Taken but..
It's my vision that the Internet, if it remains free and open, will become as ubiquitous as cable television if it isn't already. Technology, in the way of melding television and the Internet, will allow the simple replacement of the corporate behemoth news and entertainment outlets with independent content. It exists now, but the ease of use is an issue as well as the less evolved production value at present.

That combined with the fact that cable news and Fox in particular, has become so blatantly corrupted there's a chance people will (as in a free market) stop watching them. Ultimately, money is the corporate news be all and end all. If revenue drops as viewership matures and leaves corp. news behind they will either evolve or die.

That is, if this were a true free market system. What will likely happen is the government hating right wing will use government to clamp down on the Internet and stifle the competition. As it does with everything of real value. Because what we are is more a corporatocracy than a Democracy.
