They probably didn't want to wait longer as there isn't much time for Kennedy to campaign. He will probably generate local news coverage where ever he is campaigning for Obama.
2. The SotU timing stinks, but Obama can't waste any time
Super Tuesday is breathing down his neck, and he has to make the most of every day until then. Obama dominated the news cycle for today, and that's one more day Hillary didn't get to.
The endorsement dominated coverage of the State of the Union. Obama is all over the post-speech coverage. Hillary Clinton even backed out of an interview on CNN. The pundits are talking more about the significance of Kennedy's endorsement than about the State of the Union. They are also discussing how Clinton's tactics led to the endorsement and how Kennedy responded.
5. The endorsment was still the lead story on the morning shows today
With the SOTU a close 2nd. So I don't think the SOTU overshadowed it. There is not much time before Super Tuesday. This is when Obama will need Kennedy's support the most, to help change the minds of some of the old-guard Dems from HRC to Obama.
