Alert - Greg Palast will be on Randi after the half hour.
He apparently is going to talk about his meeting with Cong. Conyers last night - they met in NY. Greg turned over the caging lists.

So I don't know whether he resigned to work for Thompson or because he's being investigated.

27. Fred Thompson is hiring him? Well, that could be good for the Dems running
against Thompson. When this story breaks in the MSM...Griffin will be a part of it and that will NOT look good for Thompson because this story IS NOT NEW. Thompson KNOWS what this guy has done.

It makes him look like a fool.

On the other hand, if he does know how filthy Griffin is, he'll look like he's trying to steal the election.

36. This is politics. Mr. Conyers himself said we could impeach Bush
at the ballot box in 2008 and he knows better. (This was during an interview on Amy Goodman's Show about a month ago maybe.)

This is politics being chosen over clean elections. On the other hand, that's a politician's job, right?

Argh.

26.  500 emails - 50 with caging lists.
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 03:48 PM by DURHAM D
Not a big news story here.

The emails Greg handed over are the very emails the WH says they don't have. Conyers was particularly interested in the lists of soldiers.

Both expressing frustration with the crime family. Now talking about Monica's mention of caging - she was saying the WH is not being honest.

these felons make this a race crime. Follow brown skin and you will find the places they ripped people off first. Next are other vulnerable groups like senior communities, students, poor people.

Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 04:51 PM by in_cog_ni_to
While long lines can suppress the vote in any precinct, evidence indicates that such lines often form at polling places that are frequented by students, people of color, and low-income voters who often do not have the time or the resources to wait many hours. Some work more than one job, have trouble obtaining permission to vote from employers, or must meet child-care deadlines. These are often the precincts which receive the fewest resources for voting equipment, poll workers and poll worker training.

In the 2004 election, many voters waited in lines for well over an hour before casting their ballots.<33> And in some places, the lines were much longer—for example, there were reports of five- and even ten-hour long lines at some precincts in Ohio.<34> Even the most dedicated citizens cannot typically spend five or ten hours to cast a vote.

People For the American Way Foundation worked with a number of other civil rights and public interest organizations to implement the Election Protection (EP) program in 17 states during the 2004 election. EP poll monitors received numerous complaints of long lines at polling places around the country. In its post-election report titled “Shattering the Myth,”<35> the Election Protection coalition summarized the numerous complaints it had received:

of long lines and waits of up to ten hours to cast a ballot, especially in urban districts with too few voting stations. The lines inevitably led to untold numbers of voters who were disenfranchised because they could not afford to wait, and had to return to their jobs or their children before they had a chance to cast a vote. Further, reports of these long lines discouraged large numbers of voters from even attempting to cast their vote. Voters faced not only long lines, but also antiquated and faulty equipment and polling places with too few adequately trained poll workers or voting machines. In some minority communities there appeared to have been inequitable distribution of voting machines and Election Day resources that likely contributed to longer lines.

US Attorney Resigns
Following Conyers’ Request for BBC Documents
Published June 1st, 2007 in Articles
by Greg Palast
June 1, 2007

Tim Griffin, formerly right hand man to Karl Rove, resigned Thursday as US Attorney for Arkansas hours after BBC Television ‘Newsnight’ reported that Congressman John Conyers requested the network’s evidence on Griffin’s involvement in ‘caging voters.’ Greg Palast, reporting for BBC Newsnight, obtained a series of confidential emails from the 2004 Bush-Cheney campaign. In these emails, Griffin, then the GOP Deputy Communications Director, transmitted so-called ‘caging lists’ of voters to state party leaders.

Experts have concluded the caging lists were designed for a mass challenge of voters’ right to cast ballots. The caging lists were heavily weighted with minority voters including homeless individuals, students and soldiers sent overseas.

Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee investigating the firing of US Attorneys, met Thursday evening in New York with Palast. After reviewing key documents, Conyers stated that, despite Griffin’s resignation, “We’re not through with him by any means.”

Conyers indicated to the BBC that he thought it unlikely that Griffin could carry out this massive ‘caging’ operation without the knowledge of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rove.

I'm kind of curious, though. Why did Conyers have to read Palast's book to find out about this? I kind of assumed that someone one his staff would be reading the bigger blogs and/or listening to AAR.

48. Elected officials and staffers in D.C.
are living in a bubble. We hear it all of the time.

This seems to perfectly illustrate the truth of such an assertion.

I was trying to remember how long ago I knew that Palast had these lists - 6 months, a year, two years? I guess the moral of this story is that both the House and Senate need to assign a staffer to do nothing but read the DU - it will help them to become informed.

Randi talked today about the need for an informed electorate. My thought - we are sadly lacking informed elected officials.
