The DC Segway Patrol.....
Far be it from me to advocate limiting progress in fighting crime. And I also know how hot it gets in the capitol during the summer. But, it appears to me that some of these cops should be walking.

Seriously.

Never Fear! D.C. Segway Cops Are Here!

2. Perhaps they're hoping criminals will be incapacitated...
...by rolling around on the ground laughing at how ridiculous the cops look, and therefore won't be able to run away.

3. Speed might be a factor.
The Segway moves up to three times as fast as people can walk. Patroling that way covers a lot more ground and is more maneuverable than a bicycle.

5. Gets the officer out of the patrol car and talking to the people in the hood
The beat cop used to know everyone on his beat, he would know the kids and who their parents were. They knew when thing were a little out of place and could actually prevent some crimes because he had personal contact.
Sitting in the car cruising down the street is a little impersonal and it also is not very green.
Segways run on rechargeable batteries.
