Are DU readers and participants susceptible to Psychological Operations?
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 11:58 PM by L. Coyote
If you opened this thread, you are. This is just a test to see how many people fall for the title
when they could be reading about Bush scandals or doing what Woodward and Bernstein did instead.

Leave here now. Get out fast. Don't get sucked in by this kind of crap.

***** Go be the "Media that the Media Reads" instead. ****

Good Day and Good Night.

3. Opening the thread isn't proof of psy-op manipulation effectiveness.
You have no idea what people have or haven't read or done other than look to see what you have to say. However, buying your line and leaving without comment calling you out on it may be.

I believe it is very possible that we could be the victims of well-designed psy-ops.

See, psyops isn't really all that hard.

It ain't every day a boy gets to paint a picket fence.

I used to be a painter, and if you put a "wet paint" sign on something there is invariably at least one person that will come up and touch it "just to see if it's really wet".

26. LOL - reminds me of something
Fun thread at any rate :)

Reminds me of a book I read when I was a teen on psychology. A lady was trying to sell some jade at her store, nice stuff and a great price. The author of the book, a friend of hers, told her to double or triple the price. And the stuff was then selling like hotcakes.

People didn't want to buy cheap jewelry, especially if it was for their girlfriend (the more a person has to sacrifice for the gift the more meaningful it becomes to the recipient it appears).

29. That was the point of my line about...
It's not every day that a boy gets to paint a picket fence..

It's from _Tom Sawyer_. Tom is sent out to paint the picket fence in front of the house, a job he finds incredibly boring.

When Tom's friend comes around, Tom looks like he's really having a good time and ends up convincing his friend and a couple of others to actually *pay* him to reluctantly let them paint the fence.

A classic case of psyops.

If not, does this just prove that many DUers are slightly paranoid, and love clicking on titles with "susceptible to Psychological Operations" in?

31. No. The image was added OR Damn, now I've led the herd over the jump!
The thread had thousands of views in the first few minutes. It was unbelievable. I thought the Admins were replying in their own humorous way. Not so, or at least not substantially so. The image had thousands of hits.

The psychological operation/comparison encompasses all day yesterday. I created 15 threads, 14 with titles related to government oversight. In General Discussion, at least one and usually more, were in the 50 most recently posted list all day long, over 12 hours non-stop. Then, this psy-op thread started at 10:36 to see if it would have a different reception here. I've followed the view count for several weeks now, and noted the interest in Falwell, Cindy, and other topics, shall we say, not on the Congressional Agenda.

Here is the comparison. The 14 threads about oversight of the Criminal Junta of Corrupt Politicos, with #s of replies, recs, views, are:

15. Are DU readers and participants susceptible to Psychological Operations? Click here to hide this thread. 30 2 8604

The "herd over the jump" allusion is to this thread, with a previous op/ed about where attention is focused in DU. Also, it was a shameless exploitation of America's most hated Christian to try to turn the DU herd. Well, now I know how easy it is to lead them off a cliff. But trying to lead them in the direction of goverment oversight seems as futile as resisting the Borg. Is "Resisting the Bush" futile too?

33. Interesting. For what it's worth, I clicked on this thread because of the identically titled one
Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 10:29 AM by muriel_volestrangler
by someone else - and I wanted to see what might be going on with 'duelling threads'. I can't quite work out if OPERATIONMINDCRIME is saying he was responsible for artificially inflating the view count for this thread or not.

There can be a hell of a lot to the title chosen for a GD thread. Personally, I'll ignore most threads with 'Congress' in the title - but that's because I'm British, and I find much about Congress gets involved in procedural detail, or discussion of politicians I haven't heard of, and realistically am not going to keep up with (which is why I never look at the GD:P forum - occasionally I'll see a thread title on the Latest page, but that's all). I probably would have looked at your 'caging' thread, if I hadn't already seen the relevant article via another thread.

But I think you've showed some significant evidence (if OPERATIONMINDCRIME wasn't solely responsible for the huge view count) that either we love to read about ourselves, or feel a bit paranoid about 'psychological operations. And there could be a 'both' there.

On edit: it was OPERATIONMINDCRIME who was talking about inflating the view count, not LoZoccolo.
