Democrats plan a Capitol barrage over Iraq
Summer plans include new withdrawal legislation and more pressure on GOP lawmakers.
By Noam N. Levey, Times Staff Writer
June 4, 2007

WASHINGTON — Democratic congressional leaders, whose efforts to force a withdrawal from Iraq were stymied last month, plan a summer of repeated Iraq-related votes designed to force Republican lawmakers to abandon the White House before the fall.

At the same time, antiwar groups are expanding their campaign to pressure GOP incumbents in their home states.

Both efforts seek to ensure that anxious Republican lawmakers — many of whom have said they want to wait until September to assess President Bush's Iraq strategy — get no break from the war over the summer.

"The debate on Iraq will continue," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said last week. Pelosi, who in March helped push Democrats to embrace a withdrawal of American combat forces, has pledged that the House will vote on numerous measures aimed at ending the war.

Tom Matzzie, campaign manager for Americans Against Escalation in Iraq, the leading coalition against the war, promised an equally unpleasant summer for Republicans whenever they return home.

1. Bingo
22 GOP Senators are up for re-election next November.

Two roads:

1. Staple Iraq votes to their foreheads, force them to abandon George in order to save their seats, and thus create a veto-proof bi-partisan coalition that can shove any veto threats right down George's throat;

2. Staple Iraq votes to their foreheads, watch as they refuse to abandon Bush, watch as they get beat, and now we have a massive majority in the Senate. Add a Dem presidential win to the equation, and a lot of things can be fixed and salvaged.

Of course, there's also 3. Stalemate, status quo, no movement, vetoes everywhere, lather rinse repeat.

But this is good news.

2. I kind of like that stapling idea!
;-) I hope Dems are up to this challenge; a lot depends on it.

3. The ONLY way this will work
is for MILLIONS and I mean many MILLIONS of American citizens to get off their asses and march on their nearest large city and there needs to be a few million marching on Faux Noise, CNN, MSNBC etc and ram this down their throats until they choke on it.
Force them to report these protest.

Until this happens nothing the spinelescrats are going to do will make any difference whatsoever because they have shown repeatedly they will do nothing, they wont have anyone arrested for not appearing for a subpoena, they wont arrest Gonzales for already proving beyond any doubt that he is guilty, they wont Impeach 2 Treasonous war criminals of which there is WAY more than enough well documented evidence to convict them of numerous Impeachable offenses.

They disgust me as I'm sure they are doing to millions of other voters, if they step up to the plate soon they can kiss 08' goodbye.

4. I'll believe it when I see it,
Sorry, but the Dems have lost all crediblity with me concerning the war. Especially since they could very well stop the war at any point they choose.

5. How?
Any legislation to cut the funding will be vetoed. Any legislation to repeal the IWR will be vetoed. Any legislation with withdrawal timetables will be vetoed. Vetoed legislation won't stop the war.

So how?

10. Defund the war.

Hold up each and every single supplemental funding bill in committee and force the troops to be brought home. Take to the bully pulpit, take it to the American people, explain what you're doing.

The Dems were elected to majorities last fall with one clear demand, end the war ASAP. If they fail to do so by next fall, they will lose, plain and simple.

7. This is what I've been saying all along
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 07:51 AM by symbolman
For instance, you take those 12 or 13 Congress Repigs that complained to the White House that they were NO LONGER going to support Bush or the "war", and then since it was only lip service, turned right around and voted FOR the "war", and you make WANTED POSTERS of them.

Call them the "Rubber Stamp Republican Gang" or whatever (now we have something to staple to their Foreheads :) ), and LET THEM LIVE WITH IT.

THESE are the people that are CONDUCTING the 'war' at this point - this is Great strategy, HAMMER THEM with everything you've got, every BLOG must LOCKSTEP on this concept, HELP the Dems end this war.

The votes simply were Not there, let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Sure people were disappointed, but NOW it's Time to DO SOMETHING. :)

And let's get off the "I want the war to end TODAY or I'll hold my breath until I turn Blue.." Kick.

It don't work that way, never has, and never will.. otherwise people like Bush could have never pulled this off in the first place.

THEN, WE IMPEACH, a Nice afternoon Quickie :)

A guy CAN dream, can't he?

8. Keep Voting and Getting Repugnicans On Record
It's not just the vote, it's other things that can happen around these votes that make this a good and strong strategy for now. Force these "patriots" to vote to cut funding to veterans, fight pay raises for the active military and every other bit of damage they do to the military. Let these enablers attempt to justify why they support these things...get their words in the local media or saved for next year's campaign. Make 'em as uncomfortable as possible...and that means push one vote after another down their throat. They own this war...let's make them wear it!!!!
