I love my nanny state! I turned my problem with my cell phone contract
over to Stae Attorney General Cuomo, and I just got a call from the company that they're going to straighten it out. This was after the company told me a contract was a contract! I love New York!

1. Consumer protection does not equal "nanny state."
Glad you got some help, though, with your problem. That's what government is supposed to do. As opposed to, say, telling you what you can or cannot eat, smoke, wear (seat belts, bike helmets, etc.). THAT'S what most of us mean by "nanny statism."

4. That's how we know Ron Paul is just another
batshit crazy Repuglican. Protecting corporations good. Protecting American citizens bad.

3. so what was the problem? I'm curious.
I've always wondered what the phone companies use as justification for forcing people into signing one or two year contracts.

5. Justification? what justification is needed to ask for pricing and timing in a contract?

8. I was told I'd be getting a new phone and a lower monthly rate.
I thought this was an extension of the existing contract (which i'm pretty sure had run out, anyways.). It turned out to be a new, seperate contract. So I ended up getting billed for two lines even though I never activated the phone! Then they wouldn't cancel the second line since it took me a while to realize what was going on and I was past the 30 day remorse period.

9. it's any change that you make implicitly puts you under a new 2-year
contract. I found that out when I was checking to see if Apple's new iPhone would work with Nextel. It does not. I've heard that Cingular/AT&T may be offering some help or breaks for those who want to switch and are under implicitly-extended contracts.

10. I didn't care about a contract extension since I've been content with my service to date.
It was being charged for two lines that got me!

11. I liked my service with Nextel too. Only wanted to switch when I found
out that iPhone is currently tied to Cingular/AT&T due to some backend enhancements need by Cingular for some features to work.

I found myself under an implicit extension when I was using about 2% of the minutes per month and I changed my plan. The rep didn't mention that would automatically extend my contract by 2 years; I had about 5 months left on the contract. Fine print and all.

Now, I went from a good Nextel customer to one who will not recommend them.

I'm glad you contacted your AG.

12. Hmmm... the Wireless provider who shall not be names was recently combined
(absorbed? bought? merged?) with Nextel!
