Pork chops and bacon from stem cells. The cuts of meat without the messy slaughter and butch of live animals.

I have a question about it, then. Sort of a philosophical/theological question that will need some discussion at some point in the future.

Is it kosher?

9. Flying Spaghetti Monster
But seriously, this sounds like something out of "Oryx and Crake".

Weird.

4. I'm all for it
As strange at it may be, the potential of a clean and efficient alternative to massive slaughterhouses could be very good. Of course, I had high hopes for genetically modified foods too... But that is less a matter of the science as the failure of caution and reason in the face of greed.

This seems harder to screw up though. I hope.

6. I ask because Harry Turtledove wrote a short story about it
In the story, genetic engineers made a pig that chewed it's cud (for developing countries where food was scarce), so the debate became over whether or not the meat was kosher.

10. Argh. I was in "Departures".
I loaned my roomie the book but she's not here to ask about where it is right now.

There was an awsome story in there about public education, as well.

13. I prolly oughta engage my purchasing mechanisms, then
I've almost bought that a few times en route to get other books. (Then again, I'm way behind on his stuff; I think the last of his books I bought was "In The Presence Of Mine Enemies.")

12. Petri dish or on the hoof, it's still "pork".
I doubt that it will be considered "kosher".

15. Hence the question
I am uncertain of the details that makes pork non-kosher. I think it is because they have cloven hooves and don't chew cud.

But the meat in the dish never chewed cut nor ever had hooves, cloven or otherwise.

I know enough to ask the question, not to answer it.

Any rabbis in the house?

16. I doubt those side-issue details will be relevant to the question of "pork".
The "cloven hoof" and "cud chewing" aspects might come into play
if and when OTHER animal flesh is produced by this laboratory process...

If it was grown in a lab, then it never had hooves or chewed ANYTHING,
so that's one for the Rabbis to debate.

But "the flesh of swine" is mentioned BY NAME as "unclean" in the Torah.
There's just not much "wiggle room" in that singularly clear & concise
prohibition, and I doubt that anyone will even try to make a case for it.
