Schumer: "George Bush doesn't really care about how well the government runs"

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/2007/06/11/2007-06-11_senate_voting_on_gonzo_today.html

<snip>

"If anyone else were President, whether it's Ronald Reagan, George Bush the first, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, even Richard Nixon, Alberto Gonzales would not be attorney general," Schumer (D-N.Y.) said yesterday. "Everyone knows he is incapable of leading the department."

Several Republicans have slammed Gonzales for his firing of eight U.S. attorneys for political reasons.

"George Bush has been so adamantly stubborn, because George Bush doesn't really care about how well the government runs," Schumer charged.

4. Well, no. Gonzales is running the DOJ exactly the way George wants.
It's not a matter of "doesn't care." It's a matter of active, treasonous demolition of the United States government.

6. Like most megalomaniacs...
Bush needs someone around worse than him so he looks 'better.' Gonzo seems to be that guy.

3. Republicans think bad government is the norm, not the exception
So it doesn't really bother them when Government Fails; it's what they expected. Kind of sad (and indicates why they shouldn't be allowed with political power).

9. exactly -- they don't want anything around that will contradict their ideology
Even if it's something that is doing some good, and being inconspicuous. Best to pull it down from inside (like the proverbial tent).

Frightening Americans into staying at home and not travelling to other countries is another example ... that way they don't get to see that there are a bunch of different options out there (universal public health insurance, mass transit, and same-sex marriage, for example).

8. I think Bush DOES care...a dysfunctional Department of Justice
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 06:49 PM by Raksha
and a dysfunctional government work to his advantage, or at least they have so far. They hasn't been dysfunctional in increasing his power and preventing justice from being done, after all. On the contrary, they have been extremely effective that way. The DOJ is only dysfunctional in precisely the way he wants it to be, and it's doing precisely what he (and Karl Rove, of course) want it to do.
