Censure Vote Missed by Only "ONE VOTE" .....Who Was that VOTE + 11 Senators were MISSING!
Friend who watched the Vote with me clued me into the "Statistics" saying you needed "60%" of the Senate to Vote and not "60 Votes" as I thought. Being "math challenged myself" I'll go with my Buddy who said that he heard Bernie Sanders say that we needed 60% of the Senate (and since 11 Members were missing) it meant "60% of those PRESENT" voting for the vote.

So...WHO WAS ABSENT ON CAMPAIGN TRAIL? Hillary, Obama, McCain, Chris Dodd, Sam Brownback...Joe Biden...WHO ELSE? Did any of the former cast their vote Yes...WERE THEY THERE for the VOTE?

Maybe some "Good News" in the "Garden of Gloom" that this Dem is in right now. :-( or :-)'s

1. I thought that one person in favor of the bill always votes against cloture for procedural reasons..
so that they can re-open debate if the other side tries a procedural move against it or something.

2. only 98 to vote
Sen. from Wyoming died making 99 votes, and Johnson has not yet returned to work (though I read that he will soon be back) making possible 98 votes. I thought there were 91 votes cast leaving 7 no shows.

6. It's almost like a "I have no opinion" vote. It could have also been a placeholder vote
You vote PRESENT, then change your vote if the party leadership needs it switched. You can change it as long as voting is going on...

9. Yes...WHO WAS THAT...and why didn't they VOTE?
My buddy pointed that one out. Still...for all this "misery" it seems "statistically the vote" was much closer than the M$M will ever report but better than it was looking earlier.

 We still lost the vote..and I hope this doesn't mean it's a sign that Dems need to shut down investigations, and a I still wish the Senate had held off a few weeks so we didn't get the bad media spin...but it was closer that it was looking based on the reports from even Liberal Websites this a.m.

I don't want to offer "false hope" but if my math buddy is correct then it's a good sign...

5. You do realize that the GOP would "enforce party discipline" and make one or more of their number
change their vote if there was a chance of it passing, of course...

It's how they do it--they play these games. But there wasn't the numbers to make it happen.

10. No. For a vote to end debate, you need 3/5 of the senators, not 3/5 of the senators who votes.
Therefore, they needed 60 votes, not 54.

http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/briefing/Filibuster_Cloture.htm

In 1975, the Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds to three-fifths, or sixty of the current one hundred senators.

15. Math Buddy just said when I asked him what you said...that Bernie Sanders said
that it is 60% of those PRESENT! (Believe me...I said to my Math Buddie that I was SURE it was 60 VOTES and not 60%...but he said...Bernie verified that it was 60% of those present.) It could go back to those "Parliamentary Procedures that Senate and House use...or my friend could be wrong.

 I hope others will chime in.

if these people weren't out campaigning. I love Obama, he's my guy, but he needs to get his butt into the Senate for important votes like this.

24. I'd Love For Somebody At A Televised Democratic Townhall Meeting To Ask...
Senator Obama, Dodd, Biden, et.al....

"How did you vote on the vote for No Confidence regarding Attorney General Alberto Gonzales?"

I just want them to here the massive boos after they explain that they couldn't make that vote because they were busy running for President about year too early!

:argh:

Hell... the rePukes flew in from all corners of the fucking Planet when it came to Terri Schiavo, but our Senator\Presidential Wanna-Bees can't make it back for a vote that attempts to heal one of the major wounds inflicted on our Constitution???

It's a shame their priorities are so obviously out of whack!

25. I agree with you there.
I noticed that Sen. Clinton was there and voted yes. That does impress me. The rest of the Senators that are running for Pres. 16 months from now should be there to vote on any important issues. I can not believe Obama did not vote. I want to see how he votes on certain issues in the Senate before I cast my vote for him. It does not count when he won't vote on things but tell us later how he would have voted. I really liked him too. Now I am not so sure.

26. per Senate rules:
cloture - The only procedure by which the Senate can vote to place a time limit on consideration of a bill or other matter, and thereby overcome a filibuster. Under the cloture rule (Rule XXII), the Senate may limit consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours, but only by vote of three-fifths of the full Senate, normally 60 votes.

http://www.senate.gov/reference/glossary_term/cloture.htm

Now its a matter of what "the full Senate" means.

27. my guess
Is it's not who's present in the senate, but how many current senator's there are, which as we know right now is not 100, but 99.

I believe in this case, it would be 60% of 99 which might be only 59 senators.
