Victim's dad gets rights to O.J. Simpson's book. And will change the title.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/LAW/06/15/oj.book/index.html

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A Miami bankruptcy judge on Friday gave the father of Ron Goldman the rights to a book by O.J. Simpson that speaks in hypothetical terms about the 1994 murders of Goldman and Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole.

The book, which the former football star titled "If I Did It," may hit stores soon -- but under a new title: "Confessions of a Double Murderer," according to the attorney for Fred Goldman, Ron Goldman's father.

Simpson's lawyer said Simpson received a $900,000 advance for the book. He retained the rights through a corporation set up in the names of his children, and run by his daughter.

Goldman filed a lawsuit, and the judge determined that he was entitled to the rights as part of a $33.5 million settlement he won in a wrongful-death lawsuit against Simpson.

20. Hmmmm
When it says "the rights" it isn't clear to me whether the judge has awarded Mr. Goldman the money OJ would have made (Probably 10% of the gross sales) or the overall print rights.

If the judge only gave Mr. Goldman OJ's royalties, that means probably 90% of the gross sales go to Rupert Murdoch and the Judith Regan imprint of Harper Collins. What started out as a hugely expensive lapse in judgement for them might end up showing a profit if the book sells well.

25. It really depends on what "rights" means.
When you sell a book to a publisher, you don't sell them the book, really. You retain the copyright, but they buy various rights. Usually, it's the right to print the book and sell it in North America. (Print rights.) They may also buy foreign rights, audio book rights, and a portion of any movie rights.

If the judge had given Goldman the copyright, he really screwed OJ and Murdoch over. Goldman could take the book to any publisher and make a deal to publish it. OJ wouldn't get a cent, and Murdoch would lose everything he spent on the book.

I imagine with what he paid OJ, printing all those books, and the huge advertising campaign, that little lapse in judgement cost him several million dollars. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

obtain them.

According to the article, Arnelle Simpson now owns the rights through "her" company--the judge is essentially saying that Simpson sheltered this as an asset.

FWIW, the original publisher has gone under and been fired by no less than the likes of Rupert Murdoch. Imagine being so sleazy even Murdoch can't stand you... :scared:

16. When it was first "announced" to the industry, wholesale sales were thru
the roof.

I hope Goldman snags the rights--and refuses to allow it to be published.

21. It happens all the time
And lots of time the greed-head loses $$$. Remember Newt Gingrich's novel or the video of Ollie North's Congressional testimony? I love it when these idiots pay big bucks to some moron and end up losing their investment.

In this case, Murdoch also printed up hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of books.
