Gas-Soaked Man Tasered, Ignites & Dies, Police: What Caused The Fire???
Man bursts into flames after being shot by a taser gun

Daily Mail
Update: 13:56pm on 20th June 2007

Police are investigating the firey death of a man who burst into flames after dousing himself in petrol and then being shot with a taser gun. Officers used the gun after the man had poured gasoline over himself. Juan Flores Lopez, 47, died on Tuesday at a hospital in Texas.

Police initially used pepper spray when they tried to take Lopez into custody. Then they used the Taser. Some stun guns emit an electric spark when they deliver the jolt of electricity. The Texas Rangers were also investigating whether a lighter that was on the porch could have contributed to the fire.

"We don't know what ignited the fire," police said.

No one else was injured in the confrontation. It was unclear whether Lopez had been charged with anything. Two of his sons who live nearby said their father had been threatening for months to burn himself and his house. His wife was seeking a divorce and he did not want to have to leave the house, the sons said.

*** - And you don't know what caused the fire? How about 50,000 volts? Sheesh, the guy would have been better off if they'd shot him....

2. Either a match or a lighter
He likely had his hand on the trigger of a lighter and the jolt from the taser caused him to press down and ignite it.

5. I think most cops realize that a gun will kill...
...but I don't think any of them know what a taser will do to someone.

Or anyone else for that matter.

10. Are they not told a tazer sends several thousand volts of electricity
into a person? Electricity sparks. Any form of combustion will ignite gasoline.

12. Not only that....
...but there are so many other variables that can result in an outcome of death. Too many variables in my view for tasers to be classified as a "non-lethal" suppression devices. Whose classification in turn dictates its use. It does little good to use such a device to avoid death, if you end up killing the person you were trying to "non-lethally subdue."

Because its only non-lethal when it doesn't kill you....

13. Sorry, but its no Onion parody....
...its an http://www.kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=6680802">all-too real example of Texas justice. Or what passes for it. I just found the article in a UK paper because they like these kinds of stories that show our stupidity. Especially when there's nothing stupid that Bush has done lately that they care about.

I don't think there's much doubt.

9. Now I wasn't there, but common sense would tell me at least
one of the cops there, upon seeing gasoline and a guy w/a lighter, should have had the presence of mind to get the fire extinguisher that is standarrd equipment in every cruier out just in case somethng went "bad".

Even if there wasn't a spark from the taser, 50,000 volts can create some serious heat if something goes "wrong". In any case, this was mishandled, the guy was obviously 'out of it', and should have been in a position to be talked down. Pepper spray, that would piss him off,; setting him on fire, that is gross negligence, and the only explanation is that these cops were stupid, and had no idea what they were doing. Must have been close to shift change, and they wanted to get on w/the change...:(

Can we get someone in congress to question the validity of these lethal, "non-lethal", weapons?

Yes you would think kindergarten would have been able to get that across to the 1/2 brain cell, but...... NOOOOOOOOOOOO.
