Abu Ghraib Cover-up About to Explode
by Brent Budowsky | Jun 21 2007

snip//

At some point Gen. Taguba will be called to testify publicly and will prove one of the most explosive witnesses in six years, while investigative reporters and almost certainly congressional committees are currently looking into Abu Ghraib.

The implications of this are enormous because they go to potential perjury and giving false testimony to Congress and investigators, and lead outward throughout the dark side of the Bush years.

There is a high probability that investigation of the Abu Ghraib crimes and cover-up will lead upward to Donald Rumsfeld and his coterie of neoconservative aides and their shadow CIA run through the Department of Defense.

There is a substantial possibility this leads to the role of Alberto Gonzales on the range of torture issues at the Department of Justice and during his years as White House Counsel.

There is significant possibility this leads to Vice President Cheney, the most aggressive advocate of what the world considers torture of any senior official anywhere in the free world.

Gen. Taguba should be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his honor, integrity and courage throughout this shameful episode and for having the honor to speak out publicly, visibly and unequivocally now.

The stakes are high and the storm clouds are gathering for those who committed, ordered or covered up crimes of torture.

3. "I felt like I was in the Mafia."
Gen. Taguba has what Bush-n-Cheney and all the rest of their cronies will never know:

INTEGRITY.

4. there has to be accountability for this
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 03:46 PM by MissWaverly
I would like to see Congress make it clear that torture is not legal and that America will not stand for imprisonment
w/o charges and a trial. It's one thing to have POWs, these people have not been treated as POWs but as criminals
w/o the right of trial.

34. They haven't been treated as criminals either!
They have been smeared with their own shit, raped and murdered and that was the warm-up exercise.

I don't have words for how I feel. I only hope I never see Rumsfeld, Cheney, Rove, Gonzales or Yu on the street, It will end with my incarceration.

39. Hoot, the thought of young children in prison and
mistreated, I remember seeing "sketches" of a group of US soldiers beating an 8 year old girl. I do not know
how there has been no accountability, the Republicans even investigated Clinton's Christmas card mailings. Why
has there been nothing done, and I don't believe that they did not know. Of course, they knew and looked the
other way.

5. General Taguba won't get a Medal of Freedom
Because of his honor, integrity, and courage. These are traits that those who support Bush and his agenda will never possess, and this includes those general officers like Betrayus, Pace, Casey, Abizaid, Myers, and all the others who are nothing more then the reproductions of those generals that followed Hitler's order without question or the concept of morality.

Is it too late for this situation to have any effect on the Busholini Regime?

8. I don't think it's too late if someone does something soon; this admin
is clearly culpable in this mess, as witnessed by Taguba. I look forward to seeing what happens, and fervently hope something does!

18. That's what I've been wondering
There's supposed to be a set of pictures and tapes out there somewhere that will make the first look like a sunday school picnic, the ones that memory pill roberts kept suppressing, where are they and now that we have the Senate why in the hell aren't they out there.

32. According to the ACLU (who filed the FOIA suit )...
in testimony to Congress on 2/14/2007
3. The Department of Defense continues to oppose the ACLU’s request for release of photographs (redacted for identifying details) depicting prisoner abuse at overseas locations other than Abu Ghraib even though in September 2005, the district court specifically held that:

Publication of photographs is central to the purposes of FOIA because they initiate debate, not only about the improper and unlawful conduct of American soldiers, “rogue” soldiers, as they have been characterized, but also about other important questions as well-for example, the command structure that failed to exercise discipline over the troops, and the persons in that command structure whose failures in exercising supervision may make them culpable along with the soldiers who were court-martialed for perpetrating the wrongs. . . .<6>

Remarkably, the Defense Department invoked the Geneva Conventions among other reasons for withholding these images, even though in February 2002 the President himself held that Taliban and al Qaeda detainees were not entitled as a matter of law to protection under those Conventions. Withholding the photographs only serves to deny the American people knowledge essential to their continuing understanding of the conflict, and delay accountability for this misconduct. We continue to press for the release of these photographs in a case pending before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

12. This looks promising!
I was beginning to doubt these criminals would ever get busted because they just IGNORE subpoenas!
And congress does basically nothing about it!

Check out Olberman's piece on this in the video section.

Are Democrats really going to go out of their way to further call the Iraq war into question (and with it, the candidates who voted for it)?

Hillary Clinton did, however support the Iraq War, and she blames the Iraqi government for screwing it up.

Besides, it should be pretty obvious that a Rudy Giuliani supporter wouldn't make it to 600 posts on DU.
