If we do not nip in the bud this burst of theocratic influence in the US Armed Forces we may see the end of the world soon since, unlike the Romans, the Crusaders or the Nazis we do have nuclear weapons and the Jews in the military are the canary in the coal mine.

I was invited to the premiere by Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. The film features him and his family prominently. Mikey and his sons and daughter-in-law are all Air Force Academy graduates. I have blogged in the past here and elsewhere about the Weinstein's cause.


Mikey Weinstein leads the fight against the penetration of the Pentagon by the James Dobson hordes starting at the Air Force Academy. His son Casey and his wife Amanda appear in key scenes, what honor it was to meet them both.

The film received a standing ovation and I will be surprised if it does not win the prize for the best documentary at the festival. It will soon be distributed widely and if you thought Jesus Camp was worth seeing (it was), trust me this film will give you a whole lot more bang for your buck.

In the DK post, poster said that if you are a fan of The DaVinci Code, this movie will be fascinating for you....I am, so I will.

For years I've been hearing about all service's chaplains being taken over by the fundies, with the Air Force Academy prety much fallen to them.

It's not entirely a Right Wing Conspiracy, but with the dearth of more moderate or liberal applicants the wingnuts have tended to populate the chaplain corps by default. The Dobson's of the world have managed to exploit this phenomenon, and have their own expressways to chaplainhood.

A couple of quick notes on military chaplains...

Chaplains are not the equivalent of local rabbis or parish priests or pastors. They do minister to spiritual needs, but they minister according to the miltary's needs-- meaning that no pacifists or other touchy-feely liberals need apply since much of the ministry involves telling these kids that it's a good thing to obey all authority and to hate the enemy then kill them.

Be that as it may, all chaplains are absolutely required to minister to soldiers on the basis of the soldier's beliefs, but this is under fire now. Chaplains are trained how to minster to people not of their faith, and in the old days, you'd never, say, see a Catholic chaplain attempt to convert a Jewish soldier or insult him with last rites, communion or such. Now, however, there are fundy chaplains telling non-fundy kids they'll go to hell, and are not being immediately tossed out for not only disobeying regulations but for being a general dick about the whole thing.
