61. It's probably from one of the Terminator movies...
like at the end where the skin came off and he just had a chrome skull. I can't really see it clearly, but it be a clincher if it had anything red in the eye socket. Anyway, that's what I'm thinking. It could also be what everyone here supposes (a Death Head). I'm sure he will be asked about it now, for sure.

62. a better look at the buckle

"Left to right - Schwarzenegger belt, Nazi Deathshead Skull, Skull and Bones society logo."
From
http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/june2007/180607Schwarzenegger.htm

A skull yes, but not really a Nazi Death Head. I think he's stupid
to wear it on the cover of Time. Ugly tie.

As some people pointed out below he's into bikes, and lots of bikers wear
such belt buckles. It could also be related to the Terminator. There's even
a Terminator-like belt buckle.

66. It's not an SS deathshead; at least, it's a different style of skull
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 12:31 AM by dmesg
SS skulls were in 1/4 profile and crossed bones behind their lower half; this is full front and the bones are centered behind it. The Governator's skull is also much more anatomical and less stylized than an SS skull. I think it's the Terminator skull.

Bikers have worn skull-themed objects for half a century now and are not for the most part supporters of Naziism.

11. Meanwhile, back in reality...
I'm guessing it's probably some kind of motorcycle thing. Schwarzeneggar isn't really a Nazi. He's a motorcycle enthusiast and a patron of Cuban cigars. He's a corporate tool. And a blow hard.

But a Nazi? Sheesh.

17. One of his heroes was Kurt Waldheim and his father was an SS officer. Fasicm
and corporatism go hand in hand.

If he is just wearing it as a "biker", IMHO he is being irresponsible in the message that he's trying to get across by wearing the belt buckle for a high profile photo-op.

36. You do know what corporatism is, right?
It's not rule by corporations. It's a particular fascist belief system that sees a nation-state as one body, with government as the brain and the workers as the hands and feet. Not to defend Schwarzeneggar, but that is one particular evil to which he doesn't subscribe. Schwarzeneggar is dedicated to protecting the interests of his millionaire buddies in Callyfoarneeya, but he's not exactly fitting up his supporters with brown shirts.

How irresponsible is that whole "rebel biker" image he's cultivating? I don't know. Bikers have a certain cool caché--particularly among the yuppie boomers who ride them on the weekends and like to pretend they're cool too. I find that perfectly consistant with Schwarzeneggar's superficial cigar-chompin public persona. It's shallow, but it doesn't involve a Nuremburg rally.

He was known to goosestep and pretend he was an SS officer around other bodybuilders.

His dad was an SS officer.

44. As charming as your circumstantial cherry picking is, as flattering as your cheap name calling is...
the fact remains that Schwarzenegger's history involves no actual Naziism. Is he an egomaniac? Yes. Is he a macho poser? Sure. Is he doing the typical California Republican cheap "law and order" routine? Obviously. But that doesn't make him an actual nazi.

Has he implemented any Nazi policies? No. Does he advocate military aggression? No. Is he cultivating bigotry and xenophobia against a hated minority group? Well, I don't like his immigration policies, but he's not exactly cultivating hatred. When he made his offensive "turn off Spanish TV" remarks, it's worth noting he did so to a largely Hispanic audience. He explicitly states that he is in favor of legal immigration, which obviously a Nazi wouldn't be. He supports relatively tolerant policies toward gays, compared to most of the Republican party thinks. He isn't demagoguing on touchstone issues like abortion or gay marriage. And you'd never see a Nazi favoring tax cuts.

Is he shutting down the elctions process? No. Is he clamping down on dissent? No. Is he nationalizing state industries and mandating longer working hours? No. Is he destroying labor unions? No. Is he rounding up clergy? No. Is he shutting down newspapers? No. Is he banning opposition political parties? No. Is he confiscating private businesses and handing them over to his cronies? No.

So yes, he said some tacky things about Hitler when he was a young, vain celebrity. Now that he's an old vain celebrity, he's saying nothing of the kind--and this during a career in which he's said a LOT of stupid things. And yes, his father, a cop in Austria in the 1930s and 1940s, was a Nazi. I'm sorry that I don't buy into your "sins of the father" argument. But Schwarzenegger himself is not a nazi. He's not doing nazi things. He's not advocating Nazi policies. He's not issuing Nazi propaganda.

He's not a nazi. Your suggestion that he is, on the other hand, is a pretty crass form of stereotyping.

Okay, I guess goose-stepping, speaking fondly of Adolf Hitler and supporting Kurt Waldheim were all the actions of an innocent man with no sympathy for the National Socialists.

"According to the book transcript as reported Thursday by the Times, Butler considered Schwarzenegger to be a "flagrant, outspoken admirer of Hitler," who also frequently played Nazi marching tunes and "pretended to be an S.S. officer."

Also, according to the Times, the Butler book proposal quotes Schwarzenegger as saying, "I admired Hitler, for instance, because he came from being a little man with almost no formal education up to power. And I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for what he did with it.""

45. From Wikipedia
Corporatism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Historically, corporatism or corporativism (Italian: corporativismo) refers to a political or economic system in which power is given to civic assemblies that represent economic, industrial, agrarian, and professional groups. These civic assemblies, known as corporations (not necessarily the same as contemporary business corporations) are unelected bodies with an internal hierarchy; their purpose is to exert control over their respective areas of social or economic life. Thus, for example, a steel corporation would be a cartel composed of all the business leaders in the steel industry, coming together to discuss a common policy on prices and wages. When much political and economic power rests in the hands of such groups, then a corporatist system is in place.

47. Right. The fascist government in V for Vendetta is another good example.
They even had their cops called "finger men" and their government called "the head".

Corportism doesn't really recognize property rights of individuals. Whereas Republicans like Schwarzenegger more or less masturbate just thinking about their property right.

32. That could be a million other things.
We can't just assume that he is wearing a Nazi symblol because we like to throw around the term "Nazi" at anybody we don't like. I'm going to need a little more evidence than that. Even if it is a skull, it could symbolize any number of things; the Nazis are not the only ones ever to use a skull as a symbol. The skull is a very powerful imgae going back to the Stone Age. The number of other things that could be are beyond measure. Hell, the other day at the food store I saw a girl with swastika earrings. I didn't freak out and call her a Nazi because the swastika is an ancient hunter-gatherer symbol that predates the Nazis by 8000 years. It could have represented adhearence to any number of religions that still use the symbol - unless I'm mistaken, a few in India still use it.

I'm glad at least one other person here is able to rationally look at a situation without jumping to conclusions.

35. I don't think the skull and bones are in the right position.
The skull in Arnold's buckle is not slightly turned to the side, and the bones are too far apart.

And logic dictates that someone who is not an open Nazi would want to hide it, and therefore not take such a stupid risk by wearing such an obvious symbol (if it were indeed the Nazi death head.)

67. That's one way to look at it
You could also call it a vanitas; skulls have been used in design for millenia.

75. I'd imagine the Terminator skull reminds him how much money the Terminator made him
"I vas paid tventy-tree million dollars to shtar in zis movie."

"How do you sleep at night?"

"On a big pile of money, surrounded by beautiful vomen"

78. That or biker-wannabe. Or his kids gave it to him, or Maria gave it as a joke.
Still creepy, still death cult, IMO. But I also think babies dressed in camo is death cult, so your mileage may vary. :)

76. It's not an actual Nazi SS belt buckle, but it is a Totenkopf.
You can tell it's not a regular old pirate skull and crossbones by the way it's off-center and at and angle. Pirate skull and crossbones are always facing straight to the front.

THE ARTIST WEIGHS IN ON ARNOLD'S BUCKLE

Lee Downey Bali, Indonesia

The Govenators Skull Buckle (oh my!) to see this one and more! go to > leedowney.com

Being born in Barstow, California and now many years transplanted into Asia, I have to exert my desert penchant for Huh? Seeing my buckle on the cover of Time seemed timely...then I got a call from LA to check out Google and the Guv's waistwear and comment thereof.

The Buckle : Its a hand constructed sterling silver buckle, the skull itself also hand carved from a billet of Damascus steel. Its probably about the 4th one in a series of 10 that I made between 2005 and 2006. The little bits on the border are Fleur de Lis....(thats French, oh no)....not German eagles! I am fairly sure that the 4 corner stones are uncut natural diamond crystals. I used those on only one of the series. This one was purchased at Falconhead this past spring, in Brentwood, California.

Taking issue with What a public personality purports to convey with symbolic regalia, be it suits ties tattoos or tits, its an age old tradition that we the people, for the people have a inalienable right to engage in. Conspiracy, gossip, keen observers of it all we are, keeping society lively and the guessing game intriguing. Hidden Agenda?

Beats me. I think he mostly just really dug the buckle...thats at least for sure. He is known to have very cool bikes.

And I can tell you for certain the basis of its design and the symbol of the skull have ZERO, ZIP, NADA, NOL, ZILCH to do with WW2. Goodness. I am making a set of cufflinks to match the buckle and sending them to the Guv, mostly cause I LOVE The Terminator pics, and the fantastic art that went into creating the skeletal frame, and of course the skull.
I wish the best of luck to the Guv, I applaud his choice in buckles, I rail against the intolerant and I would like to see a skull on the waist neck or finger of every public persona, be they white black brown male asian female german or martian.

I am leaving for Aceh in Sumatra in the morning for a week to survey the coastline of the tsunami zone where we have been doing relief work. I hope by the time I get back the BS has subsided and we can go on about our business.

The show must go on. Cheers, Lee June 30, 2007 Bali, Indonesia
