5. The laws on the books aren't effective, according to some--
for example, employee verification relies on things like driver's licenses, etc. that can be easily stolen/counterfeited, and many workers have overstayed their visas and the current laws don't address that--not my words, just reporting what I've heard this morning.

which is a disaster. Anyone who votes no on cloture is voting to support the status quo.

want them in, they are going to storm the border trying to get in...Then I will agree with Pat Buchanan, it will be an invasion!!!

53. Hmm, I wonder why?
I mean corporations like Wal-Mart can verify that my money is in the bank in a few minutes yet they can't verify a legal social security number when hiring someone? That just doesn't make sense to me.

Yes, the current law has loop holes so does the one they are voting on.

Oh well, a well diluted workforce is just what the middle class needs. When the current crop of 12 million illegals get to be citizens, we will have 12 million more expecting amnesty.

Those HB-1 visa workers we will be competing against will sure be glad our Senators supported this bill.

19. As legislators, they're perpetuating the fiction that the law is or will be enforced.
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 10:10 AM by TahitiNut
The fundamental flaw in this entire kabuki is the abysmal failure to comply with and enforce our immigration laws, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE. The behavior on immigration is an example of "(economic) might makes right" ... where those who traffic in human labor have, despite overwhelming accommodations for such human exploitation in EVERY iteration of immigration law over the past 40 years, known absolutely no bounds in violating the laws.

There's not the least assurance that ANY law adopted will be respected. The granting of AMNESTY to hundreds, if not thousands, of flagrant violators of such laws in employment of illegal aliens wil do nothing but assure that such abuses and violations wil continue - despite a bolus of anti-democratic appeasement that should gag a maggot.

49. Should this piece of legislation pass the senate,
and overcome the for the present at least overwhelming disapproval displayed by the house.......... and somehow make it into law, your post highlighting the "abysmal failure to comply with and enforce our immigration laws" will be at some later time seen as prescient and will be I imagine hard to resist an 'I told you so'.

54. Exactly.
If the laws currently on the books aren't being enforced, why would a new set of laws be different?

Where are the plans for the huge bureaucracy that will be needed to monitor and process illegal immigrants attempts to gain citizenship? The bill certainly doesn't make gaining citizenship simple.

Who is going to monitor illegal employers and how are we going to know that it is being done fairly, without preferential treatment for large political contributors?

What about the "guest workers" who don't go home for the required year? What about the citizens of other countries who will just ignore the whole thing and continue to come here and work illegally?

Have proponents of this bill explained how to pay for it and not just put it on our Federal credit card?

(Hey, TahitiNut...how was your b-day? :hi:)

69. Yup. It ignores the FACT that many "undocumented workers"
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 10:48 AM by TahitiNut
... have almost no interest in immigrating to the U.S. They're doing what they're forced to do by a colonialist elite in their own countries and exploitative employers in this country - "doing jobs white Amurikans (supposedly) won't do" (like mow their own lawns?)

... and there are millions upon millions more where they came from as corporate colonialism metastasizes around the globe.

Additionally, there are millions of such people who wouldn't qualify for citizenship ... having little or no education, having committed felonies, and/or having no competitive labor advantage than their willingness to work for less than a fair wage. There are people who've been so economically ill-treated and repressed in their country of origin that they do not possess the education, health, or behavioral history that they can actually compete under the law - their ONLY advantage being a willingness to be outlaws.

Thus, NOTHING would change ... except the current scofflaw employers get amnesty and a huge increase in legally-condoned cheap labor -- a working class without enfranchisement.

Appalling.

63. It's one of those issues where people can do the RIGHT thing for the WRONG reasons.
The Disney/Pollyanna-addicted can beat their chests all they want about "those evil racists" and totally ignore the fact that the de facto immigration laws are exploitative of racism AND human beings for their labor, commoditizing human labor (a moral and legal abomination) there's a tragic failure to realize this 'legislation' is nothing but a furtherance of corporate exploitation of human beings and trafficking in human labor.

Jay Rockefeller has fascinated me for decades ... an advocate of modern noblesse oblige, a true humanist, and a person who has dedicated a large part of his life to dealing with human suffering and the advancement of human dignity in labor. While he's not been the most radical of liberals, I regard him as about as close to a man of conscience as exists in the Senate.
