The New Seven Wonders of the World have been announced
Edited on Sat Jul-07-07 06:20 PM by Bluebear
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The Great Wall of China, Rome's Colosseum and India's Taj Mahal were among seven architectural marvels named the new wonders of the world Saturday.

The other four winners, chosen by a global poll, were Peru's Machu Picchu, Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer, Jordan's Petra and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid.

About 100 million votes were cast by the Internet and cellphone text messages, the nonprofit organization that conducted the poll said.

The seven beat out 21 other nominated landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Easter Island, the Statue of Liberty, the Acropolis, Russia's Kremlin and Australia Sydney Opera House...

The New 7 Wonders of the World organizers say the contest was a chance to level the global cultural playing field and recognize the achievements of societies outside Europe and the Middle East.

Namely the Great Wall and the Colosseum.

25. That's close to a joke we made
on a high school trip to the Yucatan. "When are we going to Chicken Pizza?" we'd ask. " :eyes: " from the chaperones & teachers.

3. The Brazil one I vehemently disagree with. Where is Stonehenge?
Edited on Sat Jul-07-07 06:19 PM by WinkyDink
And a Mexican pyramid before the Great Pyramid or the Sphinx?

Am I misinterpreting the topic?

5. I think the Great Pyramid was given honorary status from the start...
...which is why it wasn't in the running. The new "wonders" have just been added to it.

I don't remember what all of my votes were, but I do recall voting for the Taj Mahal and Machu Pichu.

18. The Great Pyramid Made The First List
Most of the list I agreed with...and I wish there were room for more. Also, it's tough to compare the engineering marvels of Machu Pichu with the Statue Of Liberty or a modern day structure. IMHO they should have a catagory of structures built prior to 1850 and then after.

7. ME too! Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer does NOT belong on that list at all!
Been there done that. It is NOTHING compared to the Statue of Liberty.

Even the statue of Padre Cicero in Crato, Brasil is more interesting. The natural cataracts Foz Iguaçu is much more amazing than that crappy statue.

Most of all, why the HELL isn't Stonehenge on the list?!?

I am not surprised that Liberty did not make it. If it had been the 90's, betcha she would have been there. nt

I, too, am not surprised Jeebus made it on the list.

Corcovado was beautiful before the ugly cement Jesus was stuck on top.

The Hoover Dam is MUCH more amazing than a crappy, fugly religious statue. :puke:

Hell, I'd vote for the Panama Canal or the Erie Canal before that utter crap.

19. I'm puzzled at the inclusion of the Christ the Redeemer statue, too, but
Edited on Sat Jul-07-07 06:59 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
with respect to Stonehenge, the list is supposed to be an updating of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, of which only the Pyramids are still extant. Maybe Stonehenge was too old.

I wonder if there was some sort of campaign in Brazil to nominate the Corcovado statue, and since Brazil is a big country with lots of people, they could have packed the figurative ballot box.

13. having been to a few of these, Angkor should have been on the list
took my breath away (as did the Great Wall) Neuschwanstein, Statute of Liberty Hagia Sophia and the Eiffel Tower are NOT in the same league...IMHO.

Christ Redeemer, which I have not seen, shoud not have been on the list.

28. I agree the list is not my choices -but Hagia Sophia looks and feels a lot like the Taj IMO -granted
it is a nearly bare wall "museum" after Muslims tore out nearly all things Christian as they used the mother church of the Eastern Orthodox as a mosque for about 350 years.

I often wondered if the Taj was copy of Hagia Sophia. But then I may have been into too many domed buildings and am no doubt insensitive to the differences between buildings. And one must admit the landscaping in India beats Metro Istanbul.

37. alas, I've not been to the Taj but I was not impressed by Hagia Sophia
if they wanted something in Turkey either Ephesis or Cappidocia would be my favs...underground cities 11 stories deep with over 1,000 rooms....much cooler than Hagia. (The mosques in Istanbul are better at night when the beautiful white birds circle in the lights above them. IMO)

Where are these on the list?

1. The Himalayas
2. The Marianas Trench
3. The seven continents
4. The Serengeti Plains

All these poseurs will be long gone while the true wonders will stand in mute disdain of mankind's follies to himself.

32. well,
There's a cute story that made the internet rounds about a teacher that has her students vote on what they thought were the 7 wonders of the world, and one little girl was having a problem finishing, saying there were so many she couldn't decide. But came up with this..

1. To See

2. To Hear

3. To Touch

4. To Taste

5. To Feel

6. To Laugh

7. And to Love

I'd say that's about right! :)
