Today we're moody again. We are obviously fighting a difficult and, until recently, badly managed war in Iraq, whose outcome is uncertain. This accounts for much of the pessimism. It also doesn't help that the political system seems incapable of dealing with big problems like immigration, an energy policy and health care. Still, is the general feeling that everything is going to the dogs any more justified today than it was 15 years ago?

-------------------------

Not really. Think of it this way: Have events in general gone better or worse than most people would have predicted on Sept. 12, 2001? There's been no successful second attack here in the U.S.--and very limited terrorist successes in Europe or even in the Middle East.

----------------

As for American foreign policy since 9/11, it has not produced the results some of us hoped for, and there are many legitimate criticisms of the Bush Administration's performance. But, in fact, despite the gloom and doom from critics left and right (including, occasionally, me), the world seems to present the usual mixed bag of difficult problems and heartening developments.

---------

Why are we subject to periodic bouts of distemper? Is it a deep problem with modern democracy? Is it an even deeper problem with human nature? Or do we just have a tendency to get sick of Presidents named Bush? We don't know. The fact is that George W. Bush can probably do little to change the national mood--or the national judgment of him--over the next 18 months. For our part, however, we can hope that future historians look back on our adolescent moodiness of 2007 with as much puzzlement as some college students showed recently when I tried to explain to them just how it was that Perot got all those votes 15 years ago.

====================================

"We are obviously fighting a difficult war", "WE" bill?...WE? Thanks a lot little billy, all we really needed was to hear an encouraging word from your gigantic brain and mouth to calmly reassure us in today's upsetting world that YOU FUCKING CREATED you heartless reptilian mass murdering mother fucker.

6. ...so far...
Whenever he's on cspan someone will ask him why he doesn't pick up a rifle and head for the front lines and he invariably uses big words and withering sneers to dodge the question.

Gotta hand it to a guy who's always wrong but keeps on slugging away with clever predictions.

I heard him do that on a CSPAN call-in with Daniel Ellsberg. Got visibly nervous and mumbled that he was too young to go to Nam. He was born in 1952. He'll act nowadays like it doesn't bother him, but the chickenhawk charge stings.

39. There is always an excuse from these guys....Too young, too busy....
more important things to do, a boil on one's butt.

It never comes down to reality...they were and are cowards, it's as simple as that, and there is no way around it.

I knew men who covered up what might have been problems so they could serve....these guys made things up so the couldn't. It makes me sick.

that's how you can tell the difference between conservatives who are actual Republicans and neocons. The neos use syllables to obfuscate their bs. Neolibs seem to do that, too.

48. Yeah, but Steven Colbert stood him on his head earlier this year.
Colbert absolutely throttled him about the ridiculous failure of PNAC and the Iraq war and then handed it over to Kristol by asking, "How's that New American Century goin' for ya?"

Kristol stuttered and stammered and could only reply, "I...I...I'm speechless."

Colbert showed no mercy and embarrassed him until the segment was up. Awesome

Just like the rest of the chickenhawks. I get so sick and tired of that shit "There hasn't been another attack on U.S. soil since 9/11." These fools NEVER give credit to Bill Clinton for there not being another attack on U.S. soil from 1993 until 2001. ;(

9. Hmm... ARE things going better than on September 12, 2001?
What an interesting question to ask... Let's see... The events of September 11th, 2001 proved to be the deadliest single acts of terrorism on US soil. Yes, on September 12th, 2001 things were looking pretty bleak, and I'll admit that the following month or two had me worried and a little paranoid.

Now, however, it's almost 6 years later. We're slowly bleeding our armed forces dry. Sure, we don't get the monumental loss of nearly 3000 people in one day like we did on September 11th, 2001. Instead, we're just seeing a slow trickle that has grown to over 3600 American soldiers since March 20, 2003 - in Iraq alone!

So, let's see if we can crunch the numbers a little bit here. On September 11th, 2001, 2974 Americans were murdered by the terrorists - a STUNNING 2974 deaths-per-day average! Since March 20, 2003 (1571 days ago), there have been at least 3601 deaths of American soldiers in Iraq, translating to a paltry 2.29 deaths-per-day. Yes, things were certainly MUCH worse back on September 12th, 2001 than they are now.

Of course, that's not factoring in the potential 73,120 civilian Iraqis that have been killed, plus the 286 coalition soldiers killed, plus the deaths of at least 933 foreign contractors trying to rebuild iraq as it crumbles to the ground, PLUS the 557 coalition soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001, PLUS perhaps 3700 Afghani civilians killed as a result of the initial bombings and other assorted causes.

So if we add those deaths to the 3601 American soldiers killed in Iraq, we get at least 82,197 dead, which translates to roughly... Let's see... 39.01 deaths a day for nearly six years (2107 days, to be exact - I started the count at October 1st, 2001 because let's face it, we didn't do much in terms of fighting until October!). Still, that's almost nothing compared to the one-day total of September 11th, 2001.

So, I suppose old Billy Boy is right. On average, the days since September 11th, 2001 have been filled with much LESS death than the day of September 11th, 2001 was. 39.01 deaths is almost palatable compared to 2974 deaths! Why, I feel better already! What was the cost of it all? Why just a handful of American lives, our security, our peace of mind, and our faith in the government! Thanks, Bill!

Bill Kristol - huge fucking moron and even bigger asshole.

11. It's a miracle I even got my calculator to work.
I majored in English Literature. Math is like an alien language to me.

The numbers make me sick just looking at them. of course, there's a new estimate out saying it's possible that up to ONE MILLION Iraqis have died since the invasion of 2003. I think that number is a little too high, but my God... if one MILLION is even the HIGH end for estimation, the low end it almost too terrible to imagine.

18. Hey check out the video I made which features some of the PNACers
Have you ever noticed when he's interviewed NO ONE mentions Billy Meth Kristol ties to PNAC?!?

Although Stephen Colbert brought it up when Lil Billy was on his show. Lil Billy didn't seem to appreciate Colbert's sense of humor. You could tell he was VERY uncomfortable and seem really off guard. Only Stephen has the BALLS to question him about his ties to PNAC. Crooks and Liars used to have the video, however, it's no longer available. :=(

That's right, Mr. PNAC, that won't happen again until the insiders who staged the first one decide the time is right.

Our third carrier strike force is now on it's way to the Persian Gulf while CNN's recently been in hyper-drive playing the TERROR TERROR TERROR card -- me thinks that second attack might be coming right up. Sure hope I'm wrong, we'll see.

The same state it has been in for at least 30 years.

What a moran and a tool. He's blaming us for not being happy? What? It's not a usual mixed bag of difficutlies. We don't have troops abroad getting killed all the time. And we're supposed to be so happy about no terrorist attacks, in spite of more interference in other countries' affairs than "usual?" Thus increasing the chances of terrorist attacks, which are rare anyway.
