Iraq's Sadr back in Iran - U.S. military sources
Sun Jul 8, 2007 1:42PM EDT

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Fiery Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr
has gone back to neighboring Iran, U.S. military sources in
Baghdad said on Sunday.

Earlier this year, U.S. officials said the anti-American cleric was
hiding in Iran to avoid a major security crackdown in Baghdad,
although his aides say he never left Iraq.

"Our sources do show Moqtada in Iran," one U.S. military source
said, declining to speculate on why Sadr had gone back.

A senior aide to Sadr denied the cleric had left Iraq.

3. "Fiery Iraqi Shi'ite cleric" is actually his first name
... and Moqtada is his middle name.
Few people know that.

Also, I'm told that his closest friends just call him "al."

The Moqtada al-Sadr appearance/disappearance stories are yet another major distraction. Like the "hydrocarbon law" stories that don't really tell you why Iraqis don't like the law (it gives away most of their oil to multinationals), the stories about Moqtada al-Sadr conveniently ignore why the U.S. is so obsessed with him. He has publicly sought to unify Shi'ites and Sunnis against a shared enemy.

Guess who? :patriot:

That fiery international news network has the scoop:

Al-Sadr, who has been on a tour of Iran and Arab countries since late January, warned against "a plan by the occupation to spark a sectarian war," and called on Sunni groups such as the Association of Muslim Scholars to form a joint panel that would prevent sectarian attacks.
